Hi All,

Aside from the headlight conversions (T350/Speed 12 etc) has anyone fitted some descrete auxiliary spot lamps to their Chimaera, and if so can you provide a pic of your motor with them fitted?

On a recent night drive, despite my car having HID lamps, i found the long range performance of the headlights lacking and i'm hoping i could fit some spot lights far back in the 'mouth' of the car so that they arn't very visable from the front, but improve the illumination on main beam. I'm thinking like back, near the radiator core, although granted i haven't looked at the feasibility of doing this yet and whether there is anything i can mount them too!

I have the facelift model car BTW

Thanks

Matt

I have been thinking of this too. Hella do some nice flat oval ones that would fit in the mouth nicely!
Do you think these would fit!!!!!!!!

These are Hella ones, mounted on an ally box section bar installed across the front up high. Simple idea but not entirely straight forward to do due to lack of mounting points. Extra light was more than I'd hoped for given the small reflector size.

Looks a bit odd as was taken with very wide angle lens.

My Lamps are fitted the the same way as Pupp describes, by using a bar mounted off the air filter and horn mounting points.
They work very well.

Let say an offered idea.

i fitted mine behind the grill (mine is the early m,odel with large grill)

so when not in use, you can hardly see them.

Perfect, thats exactly the responce i was looking for as i've actually been looking at fitting those lights specifically (FF50 Hella if they are the same)
Might have to take the radiator out though to instlal them properly methinks

I have been looking at fitting some additional lights for a while as well. I have the lights, wiring kit etc but was also stumped as to where to mount them, can someone please post a few pics of where the bar is mounted and did you have to remove the Rad to fit them. I have a post 97 Chimaera and have also considered if fog lights could be fitted behind the small holes under the indicators.

Thanks,
Jon

Also, are the lights wired in conjunction with the main beam or switched/ wired seperatly?

Pics would be difficult and I'm sure not going to remove the bugger now smile

Box section ally bar with two lengths of the same again on each end, cut at an angle to folow the mouth line (roughly) and to lift the cross-member out of view. Have 'hooks' (perpendicular 'L' strips) bonded and rivetted in the ends which locate and in turn are bonded to the inner return of the mouth GRP (used Sikaflex), and is retained by one hanging strap/bracket on upper horn bolt (off side). Was going to also strap to air filter mounting bolt but didn't need to in the end as the hook arrangement is snug against the air hose (thick wall ACT jobbie) so it's not going anywhere. Also gave me somewhere to mount an air temp sensor right next to the filter which was actally the main purpose of the exercisesmile

Big Rob's is much the same but slightly simpler (I think) in that he used 'L' section ally and hung it straight off the two bolts (horn and air filter), spacing the filter down a tad and perhaps using an ext tube to move it across out the way. Guess it depends how the lamps you intend to use will mount...as I had the elliptical Hellas, I wanted them right in the 'corners' but I reckon round lamps more toward the c/line look cool too.

No need for the rad to come out 'though it is tight wink

Mine are wired with main beam but are on a switched circuit so they can be left off. Little illuminated switch just fitted in the plastic steering coulmn surrond on the front face ahead of the ign key.

Guys, i'm struggling, your opinions please....

On my car, should i fit the Hella FF50's (Oval) or the FF75's (Rectangular), i can't decide. The FF75's apparently give better light pattern, but as the front of the car is very curvy, i'm torn. I also plan to install ~100w+ bulbs in them.

Pics........

Car

FF50

FF75

Any opinions appreciated!!

Thanks

Matt

I was planning on fitting the FF75's as they suit the shape of the mouth better in my opinion. When are you planning on doing yours?

If someone wants to donate a set of 75s, I'll happily hang them on my brackets and post up the pics. Can't say fairer than that biggrin

Dont think there is enough room under indicators without doing some fibreglass chopping!

I wired mine to the main beam wiring harness, but they dont seem to illuminate too well, have a dull orange tinge to them.

how do i get a feed from the battery to the front ?

From the passenger footwell up to hole through into void above inner wing (right under windscreen corner behind dash shelf, shine a torch up and left through access hatch where handbookpocket is), runs all the way to rear of headlamp void. I hung a weatherproofed relay off the inside of the headlamp access panel in the wheel arch and took the trigger feed from the existing m/beam wiring.

Cheers Everyone, decided on the FF75's and ordered them this morning, along with some 100w H7 bulbs.

After scoping out my car, i think i'm going to have to make up an 'A frame' from alloy box section to put the lamps in the right place where i want them (Further back near the rad so they are less visible. I'm going to have to remove the bonnet and drill new mounting points too i suspect.

Thanks

Matt
