Dear all.

Excellent forum...

Im suffering. I've come so close to buying a Chimaera over the last couple of years but never managed to make it happen. But I finally think I may have found the one I'm looking and I was after an opinion on something: Chimaera 4.0 1999 PAS 5,000 miles £22,000. If I'm doing say 5,000 miles / year. Is this car going to depreciate massively over the next couple of years?

Many thanks, can't wait to be the one getting into the TVR in the Tescos carpark

Not really, 6000 miles a year is the ideal point so any less than that and you should be fine...

Wouldn't think so, it's already taken the bulk of the depreaciation hit. At £22k it's topside for a 4.0 99' model but I guess it's a good one right spec for you etc. It'll will drop a bit more but a well looked after 4.0 Chimaera should bottom out around £15-£16k and who knows, even start to creep up0 again in a few years time. Go for it if your heart say so! Rich...

Cheers guys

Just one other quick question. Its only done 5,000 miles in 4 years. Is that a good or a bad thing? Its had all the proper servicing, looks and feels incredibly tight. Just seen a few posts on here saying that they like to be run regularly. Is it possible for a Chimaera to not have been used enough??

When I was looking, I estimated that my (450) would drop £1.5k - £2k per year, down to a minimum of about £13k.

That said, as they're no longer in production I'd expecet that minimum to start to rise over the next few years.

Plus, being a 99' you're in post revision territory and after the worst of the problems were ironed out.

I agree £22k sounds a tad big for a 400, but if you buy it you won't regret it!

Admoss,

You can have mine for £14k ono

It won't depreciate as much but will be harder to sell on as it's an insurance cat D, 99T 15,000 miles See my profile (current cars) if you're interested

It's probably not old enough to matter but you should find out why it wasn't being used. Were there many faults and so it spent its life in the garage? Also with this mileage all the little faults may not yet have appeared. Was it used for a year and then garaged for three? Better that the car be used frequently though that said short journeys are bad for any motor. When all is considered this mileage could be a little low.

One thing that might suffer from little use is the differential: make sure it's not whining. Also take the car for a good run on the test drive to make sure it warms up OK and doesn't overheat: a good chunk of motorway followed by urban crawl will test the cooling. At this time of year expect the motorway temp to be 75-80 and the urban temp up to 90/92 before the fans cut in. You'll hear it when they do: if it's not hot enough leave it running and wait!Apart from that, if it's been loved and passes all the checks...

Have TVR completely stopped making the Chim now? I thought that they were still available to order?
