I went down to Power Eng with Mark Adams to look at my 500 a few weeks ago. I am looking at ways to increase the performance of my 500 (accelarating, not cornering), not for any reason other than I can - and my boss has a 911 Turbo and I want to surprise him.

We spoke about potential mods, one of these was nitros, which I was informed could be fitted for round about 1500 quid. Harping back to my childhood growing up watching Night Rider pressing the turbo button, nitros also really appeals!!! It is also a mod no-one else I know has fitted yet.

Apparantly as long as I do not want more than 100-150 bhp the standard engine should be fine with this. This seems like v cheep horsepower that you can use selectively.

Some might think this a stupid question, but is this road legal and what are the chances, if any, of insuring it? I'm almost sure this will be a no-go, but thought I'd ask anway.

there is someone who has fitted nitros to a Griff, and it seemed to have caused a lot of problems with other components.

Why not go the whole hog & stretch out the body by 6 foot, only have 1 seat, 2 small go kart wheels at the front, 2 big tyres at the back and the engine out of a Tornado.............

Have a chat with Richard Thorpe at RT Racing (formerly Wedge Automotive), he's done this to a Griff.

Yeah Nitros is a simple and effective way of doing this. Having been to Power Eng myself, I got chatting to a couple of people there. They have a rather impressive Focus with a supercharger and nitros - 340BHP or there abouts with everything running at full tilt... but thats the problem. The ford engine management system doesnt lend itself to manipulation like this (though there is a re-mapping solution available, its not comprehensive enough for this type of scenario)....

The Rover ECU does lend itself to this type of thing though. You can just about change anything in the programme and get it working like a treat..... the big problem is that you need to do a major amount of plumbing and manipulation of the overhead pipes / cables / sensors / etc... This is time consuming and where the problems come in - would you willing take a reliable TVR and muck with it?

Its all relative of course - speak to RT and Power Eng at length about this. Some cars like the Scoobies and Evos are simple, even the VW / Audi 1.8T engine is pretty simple also. But once you get to larger capacity motors it can be a nightmare...

Oh, and one final comment - you need to keep Nitros at a certain temp (cant remember if this warm or cold!), but keeping a constant temperature in a TVR is an almost impossible task....Personally I would go the ACT induction, MA Re-map & rolling road, new Cam and see what you get. If you still need more from there try a RPI or V8 developments stage 2 engine....

V8 Developments do a 'standard' performance package of a 450 bhp crossbolted big lump with hot cam etc, they usually have fitted extra nitrous ports on em so it is definately a viable proposition.
When mine was being done they had one which was ready for shipping to a Scandinavian customer who was going to fit it into a Caterham!
They also have one bolted to a 6 speed Viper box if you want to try it out, it currently resides in their racing team support vehicle......a knackered looking sherpa van
