Just wondering how the fire cement repair is holding up. Any leaks yet or is it still sealed?

Hi , I did the fire cement thing on my offside manifold, it held intact for about 500 miles however a quick repair using the same principles is no problem as I can do it in situ so 'ta' Cornish Pasty for a good idea!!

Did the same repair using gun gum in a syringe( with the sharp end removed) and it's ok after 3000 miles.

Serious thread resurrection...

I seem to have the same issue in my manifold 4-1.

I have some gun gum and was thinking of giving this a go at some point.

How is everyone's holding up after all these years?

I tried this myself with gun gum last early last year after reading these threads, but it only lasted a few hours on the motorway before the heat was too much. I ended up investing in some ACT manifolds. Interesting to see myself how the others are getting on though.

Is this the type of Fire Cement? http://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-fire-cement-...

If so it says it woks up 1250c so should be good.

Also some of this? http://www.halfords.com/motoring-travel/cleaning-b...

If good I'll give it a go, even if its temp as the noise is driving me mad now!!

Totally awesome stuff, I've used it on cracked cast iron exhaust manifolds and seen it used on cylinder heads & engine blocks too.

Its one of those get you out of jail bodges that works so well it almost elevates itself from the status of bodge.

Just make sure you degrease the surface perfectly, while you can make amazingly effective and long lasting repairs with JB Weld it can also fail in minutes if you try to apply it to an oily surface.

Since my post in 2008 I did another 2500 miles on the repair and it was still ok when I decided to de-cat and had the joint welded while the manifold was off; so over 5000 miles for me.

I fixed mine with fire cement, it does fracture and break up after a while, 18 months for me. I cleared the old cement out and reapplied fire cement but only got a couple of months second time. This junction is poorly constructed and suject to corrosion, I'm guessing it will eventually fail on many manifolds. It is possible to cut a section out of the cone connecting the four pipe section to the precat section. This would give access for welding without removing the manifold.

I gave up in the end and fitted a set of Act stst manifolds.

Only stable upto 260 degrees though. My manifold up to the cat was over 300 at tickover when I checked last weekend.

Well I got all the parts in my post above.
I made up the mixture of Fibre Glass matting and fire cement and stuffed it in the 4-1. Then smoothed over with more fire cement.

Going to leave to set over 24 hours and see how it is. I did start it a few times to put some heat into it, seemed to sound better. Proof will be in the pudding though. really hope this sorts it out, even for only a couple of thousand miles.

I'm confident it was the 4-1 as when The exhaust started to warm up it started to spit a lot of water residue out the back. This being that I soaked the 4-1 joint as recommended before hand. So a lot of water must have gotten into the exhaust via the hole. Hopefully this will not harm the CAT's.
