Anyone know if these are available as spare-parts? Mine have crumbled and torn to the point of ineffectivity.

Are you talking about the ones on the inside of the hood, that have velcro attached. IF you are, mine are stitched to the hood!
Been talking to a fellow PH'er last week about (I think) the same problem.

He sent me a couple of pics, if you'd like to have a look to compare, drop me a mail.

If it's the litle flappy bit on the outside, that's technical speak, then just replace them using 6mm rubber sheet, oo err matron!

Remember what your mother told you.... if you keep pickin' at it with your fingers it'll never heal up.
Wish the rest of my roof was as good as the little flappy bits... will need a new one next year i recon. Anyone fitted one themselves and done a good job or is it a pro trimmers job.

Nah.... knew this had potential to go wrong. It's not THEM flappy bits, it's the little rubber widgets that seem to go between the hood fabric and the car bodywork (ie just above the velcro) Think the idea is they act like a flashing to channel water outside the car. I know what I mean anyway

Yes you do Al. You sent me some pics of your 'Elephant Ears' : podie:

I'll see if I can find them.

Edited bit
Here we go...

It was you Al wasn't it?
Although thinking about it I think we are discussing the thin rubber piece that goes between the hoop and the body on the outside but inside the elephant ear (with me so far???) It directs the water down between the door and the body. I have been comtemplating this for a while now and am looking for some wet suit material or similar to fix in there.
I will be at Fernies within the next 2 weeks (with a bit of luck) will have a look at the Chimaeras there and see if I can get a photo or two.

Hi Mark. no need to mate. I’ve had a lot of correspondence on these and other bits around the same area over the last week or so.
I got a mail from a fellow P/Her this evening and he's got some funny shaped flaps (ohh err) on his car.
I won't post the pics without his permission. I'll email you some pics to see if you can work it out!

Drop me a mail and I'll return with attachment. Lost your address when PC went tit's up recently!

Nope...warmer but not quite. They're behind that bit and run longitudinally along top of velcro strip on inside of hood...mine used to partially obscure/impede the velcro bonded to the car (I always thought it was a particularly crappy design). I'll try and snap a photo or two myself if that description doesn't do the trick

Know the bits you mean - they are very important to channel water away into the door return.

Mine perish every couple of years and get replaced by the dealer at service time. Pretty sure they're not spares as such as they never seem to be the same size.

Just try and get the appropriate type of rubber and glue on....

Yep! twas me, I'd recognise hand anywhere!

Well on the Fernies front I bet you to it!

Was up there yesterday. Spoke to Brian on and off for a couple of hours. Came home with loads of new snippets including what these EARS are. Think it might be use for future reference to call the elongated rubber tube (as in my pic above) and elephants trunk!

So here goes it's a bit on the long side as I found it difficult to describe. In fact I think it may be pertinent to start a new thread in case I run out of space on this one. OH

The two flappy pieces of rubber affectionately known as Elephant ears.
Look like this (this one has torn off, it should be abot 15 mm taller along the ragged edge.

Pictures courtesy of Rod Cox.

Do you have a set of these on your car?

What do they do? Stop water ingression into the cockpit around the targa hoop hinge?

Do I need them.... Debatable!

I was asked where can you get them?

Well AFAIA you can't! But you CAN make them yourself!

If you have an existing one as a pattern let get some thin, 1/16 thick neoprene rubber (or inner tube) and cut some new ones.
If you don't have a pattern send me a mail with you address and I will send you one. The pattern is courtesy of Brian at Fernhursts.

Fitment isn't that easy to describe so I'll take the liberty and post a few more pictures from Rod Cox to assist me here.

The picture above shows an approximate position for the ear, but it needs moving up under the hood material see next pic. with hood material pulled away form the hoop rubber and upwards to allow for gluing.

The hood material then laps back over the ear to leave just the lobe of the ear showing. The hood material is then glued back into its original position, with the hoop rubber. The ear lobe should not cover the Velcro hook strip. The last pic shows the relative position of the lobe with the door closed.

Well I hope this is of some use to you Guy’s and Girls, it’s been a bl**dy nightmare to compose.

Hope it helps and solves the mystery.

Big Al, would you send me the pattern as I don't have these on mine and I will try anything to stop the water getting in.
