I want a Le Mans Corvette sounding exhaust !
Discussion
I know this subject has been approached many times but im still not sure if I have found the answers to my questions yet if you know what I mean.
I have a 500 with standard exhaust system. When I purchased it a few years ago the baffles had been removed from the silencer box .
The car sounded great but I never seamed to get any pops and bangs. In a attempt to improve the sound I had the cherry-bomb silencer fitted back in the silencer box.
( nice job schole by the way) . Now it sounds much deeper and more throughty. Still not much pop or bang and definitely no louder.
So my questions are this really.
should I loose the pre-cats? , should I go for straight through pipes? . should I have a hole sports exhaust system fitted and do I need it re-mapping if I do this?
I hear some people have mentioned “sleeving” what is this and how and where is it done?. Why don’t my car pop and bang much in overrun ?
Or all or part of the above.
My aim is a deep sounding loud car with pops and bangs that doesn’t sound too tinny .
That can’t be to much to ask for can it?
Also can anyone give me an idea of costing of the above modifications.
Many thanks Stu
P.S please no one ask why???? . I love loud stuff is the answer to that!

you won`t get much IMHO until you get rid of the precats, then if you want it louder, bin the main cat as well, sleeved pipes are put in the silencers, standard set up is 2 perforated pipes wrapped in wadding, either remove the perforated pipes and replace with new tubes, or, wrap a sleeve around each perforated pipe, but still replace the wadding so as not to have a tinny sounding silencer.
complete straight through is nice, but not to everyones taste, personally I love it

You'll be wanting the following system then...
ACT stainless steel sports manifolds with decat pipes and smoothbore y piece, then the stainless steel cherrybomb exhaust system for the rear. I've had several comments on my car sounding like a nascar which is about what you're looking for. These videos were taken shortly after I put it on (on a bit of a rubbish camera phone) but it had crap cam timing so wasn't running quite as well as it should. Since then its been set up properly and I've added a supercharger so its got even deeper and louder . Must get some new vids when the sun comes out!

Hope that helps

The deep bit is easy.
Remove precats.
Fit V8 Enhancements Y piece.
Leave rest of the exhaust standard.
For the pops and bangs, that’s a bit more involved. The best way is to fit an ECU with multiple maps and a switch on the dash.
Normal map, deep but no banging.
Alternative map with more banging than anyone could stand full time.

Agreed, pops and bangs are easiest achieved by retarding the ignition lots on zero throttle and reducing the fuelling down to a minimum, while removing the overrun fuel cut. This can probably be done on the 14CUX but is much easier on something like an Emerald or Megasquirt. With my Emerald I can make mine pop even more than a Cerbera, but it gets annoying after a while so I've gone with just a slightly antisocial map Remove precats.

Poppin' and a bangin' can be easily achieved by feathering the throttle ( in my experience) Change down into second sans throttle then just give it the tiniest touch on the gas pedal . It can be done in other gears but second is probably best as you will be at a suitable speed to impress any unwary pedestrians!! Sorry if you know this one already , I'm not trying to teach my grandma or anything....

On the pre cat Griff I changed the standard 500 exhaust for a ACT cherry bomb quad exit which is now pretty loud and with a deep bass boom at tickover. I had the ACT manifolds already. On the rolling road the BHP and torque figures were almost identical - it was the same rolloing road but 12 months apart with the weather almost identical on the 2 days. Not a big sample but a sample nontheless.
