I'd expect them to be rigid and not flex.

Is it possible to run the engine with the drivers side cylinder head cover removed? or would oil spurt about? If so then any tapping component could be diagnosed carefully with a stethoscope.

Most common cause of ticking is blown exhaust manifold gasket (& cheapest to fix biggrin)

The pushrods shouldn't flex, but the original design was for softer springs and something like 0.3?" valve lift, plenty TVR's have stronger dual springs and closer to 0.5" valve lift as well as turning higher rpms.
