Serp power steering pump - which one?
Discussion
Hi all,
Just thought I would pick your brains. TVR Barnet told me the whine in my bay is the power steering pump and it is on its way out, would rather replace than the bearing explode in it. Is this true as I have read on here that the whine is not always the pump?
The whine is definitely linked to the steering though as is louder when turning the steering wheel whilst movnig or stationary.
The bible says it is a Land Rover one - but which one? Can someone send mm a link to it? How about Ebay? Should I get it reconditioned and if so where? Is reconditioning reliable?
Thanks a million

TVR Barnet said power steering pump but this could be wrong?
Any advice to identify?
Thanks.

An alternator whine is affected by the electrical load, so if you rev the car slightly so that the alternator can supply plenty of current - turn on the headlights and listen for a change in level of the whine. If it does increase with load then it's a reasonable bet that it's just a quirk of the alternator. It's more a design weakness than a fault. I spent many years with Lucas trying to resolve it for them - a long time ago. It's not just Lucas/Magnetti Marelli alternators that have this problem and it's only a small percentage of a production run.Any advice to identify?
Thanks.

Hi,Checked the power steering pump today against the photo on this link that was recommended and not convinced that it is the same... here are some pics - can anyone identify and confirm if the link is the right pump or I need something else?
Thanks in advance for your help - couldn't do without it!

Had a similar problem when my PS pump started leaking on a pre serp engine, could not with confidence locate a replacement part.
Took it off and sent it to PSR Direct Ltd (tel 01924 464428) who stripped, serviced, tested, painted, and sent it back in 48hr turnaround for around £100.00 including carriage both ways.
Top job, would recommend them to anyone, and believe that they can service racks, boxes and anything hydraulic. Having talked to them I also understand that they are working on an electric powered system to be available soon, and having a fabrication facility can make up brackets, subframes etc, so interesting guys to know.
I don,t think it a good idea to mess with the standard system to make low speed steering easy,er as this would spoil the high speed feel, but can say that the serviced pump made a world of difference to my car so the pump was getting tired before it started leaking.
