I have always gone outside 5 minutes before I have to leave and started the car up so its warmed up a bit before i set off.

But I heard somewhere that this wasnt good. Is that true?

Best way get in and just drive it not going mad on the revs until warm

P,S while your waiting for the car to warm up where are you.

If your not sat in the car and it gets stollen you wont be insured

If you drive it to warm it up you get heat into the gearbox oil, the diff oil, the brakes etc.

Its quite lonely round here and they would get delayed by the gate.

I will need a left glove for the gearstick if i am not going to warm it up!

There was a thread about this a little while ago that had some good arguments in it. If this post gets edited, it'll be 'cause I've found it.

Personally, I always leave it for a short while (30 secs to 5 mins), mainly to let the revs settle but also cause it takes some time to get the roof off .

ETA> This thread, but it's not the one I meant. I can't find the other one, but griff2be made an interesting point.

Start it and drive off as soon as sensibly possible. Or hold the revs at 2000. Don't leave it sitting on the drive warming up - you need some revs to pump the oil around the engine - think about it.

Leaving the engine to tickover will also put a high load on the valvetrain/camshaft at the moment when it does not have any/much oil lubricating. This is why when you build an engine with a new camshaft you get strict instructions to start the engine and immediately get to 2000rpm for 2 mins, then 3000rpm for 5 mins before dropping to tickover. Or something similar.

I normally drive within minutes but I don't go over 3,000 revs until the tewmperature reaches 70.

Normally have to leave mine a minite or two (especially this time of year) else the engine splutters like crazy as soon as any load is put on it. It's fine after a couple of mins though.
