Revs dropping on idle

I have recently had a problem that seems intermittent of the revs dropping and stalling when stopped at lights, definatelly not driver error as this can happen sat still and out of gear. i will then use extra revs and the car is a bit stuttery but not to bad untill i depress the clutch then it will stall again. this happened for an entire 15 mile trip where i managed not to actually stall by giving extra revs when stopping, i then rerun the same journeywith the car running perfectly. has anyone got any ideas?
