Its a water to air charge cooler, most likely a 600hp rated 700cfm type 14 from Frozen Boost in the States:

http://www.frozenboost.com/air_water-ic/water-to-a...

They are surprisingly cheap probably because they're Chinese made, but that doesn't make them bad.

For some time now I've been looking at using one on the opposite side to Pupp paired with the SC-Power Rotrex supercharger kit.

I've spent some considerable time researching the Frozen Boost charge coolers and can find nothing but good things written about them:

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/water-meth-injection-n...

There are a number of benefits of using a water to air charge cooler, for me one of them being you don't need the two big ugly pipes you see on the air to air intercooler supplied with the SC-Power kit.

Water to air charge coolers are nothing new, first seen on mid engined forced induction cars like the Lotus Esprit turbo due to the problems of mounting an air to air charge cooler in the airflow, they are well proven and can be very efficient at removing raised air temps from a compressor.

I'm talking to this guy who is also using a Frozen Boost type 14 charge cooler on his crazy Beetle Cabriolet that runs a Subaru turbo engine:

Everyone you talk to seems to rate these cheap Frozen Boost water to air charge coolers, perhaps Pupp can give us some in & out air temp figures to prove its effectiveness on his excellent turbo TVR Chimaera scratchchin

Here's where I publicly started to explore the charge cooler idea over a year ago, although I'd been thinking about it for some time before this:

Great to see it in place on Pupp's car, I would love to hear how it performs.

Can you share the in & out temps Gary?

Yep, it's a type 14 - can't give any definitive actual temperatures yet as, frustratingly, the one instrument I really wanted to work reliably has proved far too sensitive to the vagaries of TVR wiring; the temperature thermocouples either side of the charge cooler are not holding steady readings and are too sensitive to loads on the electrics so I'm revising the wiring to incorporate a regulated 12v supply. What I can say from the data I have and from using an IR thermometer etc is that at the lowish boost levels I'm presently at, IC temps are generally just a couple of degrees above ambient with the pump running. With he pump running the cooler has never been anything other than cold to the touch after a run, which I have been very surprised with given its location above the manifold. I have a heat shield to go in that gap but just haven't bothered with it due to this - may all change of course as the wick gets turned up

Brilliant thumbup

I've tried really hard to find some negative comments on the cheap Frozen Boost coolers, I've sent PMs to people using them in the states and read all the posts on as many Yank sites I could find discussing them.

After all this I can honestly say the worst I've found is comments on the welding not being very neat and one guy who had a fracture at one end of the unit, I'm pretty certain that was down to it being poorly mounted.

Everyone to the man that's reported on these Frozen Boost coolers says they work exceptionally well, they also say for the money they are an absolute steal.

Who cares in they are Chinese made, they are cheap and they work!

And lets not forget what sort of boost the Yanks are putting through them, they all seem to be running over 20psi with no issues with the Frozen Boost coolers whatsoever:

Here's a cut & paste of the results from someone running a type 14 on a Subaru:

CRUISE:
Ambient 93*
intake temp steady at 97*
Turbo outlet temp ~115*
IC outlet temp steady at 2-3* above ambient
ON BOOST:
Boost up to 20psi
Ambient 93*
Intake 97*
Turbo outlet 145-150*
IC outlet 85-86*

Very impressive & pretty conclusive when you read on:

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/water-meth-injection-n...

These cheap but proven effective Frozen Boost water to air charge coolers look excellent to me, and it's definitely the way I'll be going when I eventually give 'Ol Gsbag' a blow job wink
