I seem to have a fault with brake lights, they work except the high level.
Anybody give me a clue as to how I remove it without breaking?

hmm, I stripped back the tape from the protective sleeve but can't see any physical breaks...I guess it's going to have to be an auto-electrician :-(

I would go back and remove all the tape insulation and have another look, this is a common problem and the cause is normally the wires! You are looking on the pass side near the boot hinge right?

Failing that to rmeove and replace you need to undo the connector and unscrew the two screws on either end of the high level light (just look at it and the screw heads are obvious)

Then it should just pull out with the plastic surrounding trim.

I'll take another look.

On removal I see no retaining screws, can't see any way of getting to it from the boot side as all panels swwm to be welded in place covering the light area?

Try this link. The screws are visible from the outside of the car and are at the end of the light itself.

mine doesn't seem like the posted article 53 plate TF. Can't see anyway of getting it out and don't want to crack it forcing it.

Mine were broken about 10 mm inside the main loom. I checked it out by spiking the wires and using a meter. I crimped a join in and did not retape the loom so the wires can flex.
Ps threads on The T bar and MGF Register frums about this. I put pics of my repair on one of them. It looks untidy, but the wires are free to move.

The link and instructions posted are for an MGF, not a MG TF, hence why yours looks different.

Have you stripped the tape off right back to where the boot lid wiring joins the main loom?
From my experience this is where the wiring most commonly breaks, rather then next to the hinge itself.
I will look up the wiring colours when I get home (don’t have my manual to hand).

thanks Steve if you can let me know...I guess I may not have gone far enough back stripping the tape as I didn't go all the way to the main loom

The supply for the light is green/purple, and the earth black.

thanks all, found the black broken wire and now brake light working fine.

Also found a broken purple one which explains why the boot interior light doesn't work.
Couldn't easily find the other broken end so at the moment it can stay broken.

What a ball ache getting some of the tape off....need to gather my patience before tackling the interior boot light again

Hi, having recently purchased my new project, i need to ask the same question. in the last statement, concerning the 3rd brake and boot light not working, can you indicate where the break in the wire was situated. the brake light is fine, i have removed and applied 12v, so it has to be a wiring issue as i cannot see any referance to a in line fuse. the bulb in the boot is also fine, cleaned the contacts whilst i was there, i see the area is not the cable loom strapped to the l/h boot hinge, so how far do i go back to look for the break.

Apart from that the car is running fine, well, so the wife tells me frown

cheers
Steve

Breaks normally occur in the section between the cable tie on the boot hinge and the where the boot loom joins the main harness, as this is where the loom flexes when the boot is opened/closed.
On mine the break was less then an inch from the main loom, so I had to cut the main loom insulation to get enough wire free to enable a new section of wire to be soldered on.

Presumably when you removed the brake light you checked there was no power getting to the connector on the boot loom?
