Hi all,

Whilst looking for a cheap dieseasal estate I have come across an MG CDTi, its an 03 plate with 150k and plenty of service history, apparently. This is my first ever dieseasl so I'm on a learning curve! Are they decent and reliable cars? The few reviews I have found suggest they are pretty reliable (BMW motor is supposed to be very good), but I don't know anyone who has owned one, and my last experience of a rover was a metro which I trashed as a teenager.

Any tips/pointers would be gratefully received.

I've had one of these, an'04 face lift model, for 5 years now. Bought with 83k on the clock, now past 170k. Engine is the strong point, clutch and electrics the weak points (on mine, anyway). Nice cars to drive, 138bhp is adequate but nothing special compared to a modern diesel. Fuel consumption can vary according to what you read on the forums, I get about 42mpg on a run, bit less around town. It's handling is where it scores, whoever developed these knew what they were doing. It's a bigish car but steers very well and more or less goes where you aim it without much body roll and accurate, involving steering. Mine has Falkens on it on 18" wheels. Does tend to be heavy on tyres though, worth keeping an eye on the tracking. Nice comfortable and supportive seats make the interior a pleasant place. Diesel ZT-T seems to keep its value better than others, v8 excepted. Forums are helpful places and most parts, in my experience, are available. I should probably have sold mine by now but find it difficult to find a car that matches it for the same money. I'd recommend one but as with everything read as much as possible about them and keep your eyes open when buying. If it's a good one you won't be disappointed.

Just bought my second one specifically for an 80 mile commute down rural A road. Great car, looks the part, comfy and as above the ride is brilliant on twisties @ 44mpg nailing it. The clutch is the weak point.

I had an 03 plate ZT-T from new. Was very reliable, clutch went under warranty.

Very comfy, thought it handled well but got crap MPG low to mid 30s) doing 35K + a year.

Fuel pumps went when I sold it but other than that it was very good.
