I have just bought a Midget with a stage 2 1380cc engine and would like to know what grade of engine oil it should be run on.

I know as a rule of thumb older cars tend to be best suited to a mineral oil but with this engine that was built 12K miles ago is a semi-synthetic or synthetic oil better?

Thanks.

Personally I'd go for a good quality 20/50 mineral oil. My engine is a 1330 and while it's not got many special internals, it is thoroughly thrashed at every opportunity.
Where about in the UK are you? Sorry, Just looked at your profile and see you're in the NE.

Thanks for the suggestions and it concurs with my thoughts. The vendor said he thought it had semi-synthetic oil in but I will refresh with a good mineral oil.

Great fun cars though!

I agree with 20w/5o too

Castrol Classic stuff seems pretty good :-)

How often you change the oil is as or more important than what you use, for an agricultural Midget or B engine buy cheap 20w50 and change it every 3000 wink

Esso Uniflo - if you can find it - one of the best mineral oils around - I've even run it in Turbo charged modern engines with absolutely no problems at all - all you have to remember with mineral oils is keep the changes frequent. I'd personally stick 15w40 in it but if you want it, 20w50 is available. 20w50 would be unnecessarily thick though and is really the preserve of race engines and the like.

20/50 Mineral - There's nothing about a 1380 that changes the oil requirements from the std. spec. Typical clearances and seals in an A series need the thickness to work (and even then some of the seals are arguable!)

I ran mine (1380 I use to rag most places!) with Castrol or Halfords Classic and changed it every year or 2 (4000 miles tops).
