So, I'm looking for a fun weekend car which i can take my 2 wee boys in. I would like a classic 4-seat convertible for 10Kish but nothing is floating my boat. Good Stags are too expensive, don't fancy anything 80s or later, but I was told recently that the BGT rear seat fits in the Roadster if you dump the hood (and this will be a sunny days only car for short local trips.

You can see what I'm thinking. Is this insane?

John, this is quite a common request...and is, yes, a little 'insane'. The rear of the Roadster is no more than a luggage shelf and there's no room for rear passenger legs. Not sure of the age of your wee boys, but even if nippers, there's the issue of fitting correctly mounted iso-fix mounts for their safety seats. Personally, I'd value their safety as the highest priority here.

A few years ago a friend had the same requirement within a similar budget. He scratched his head for a long time trying to find a good safe classic for this requirement. Together, we short listed suitable cars down to a 70/80's Jaguar XJS and/or a Mercedes 280/350/450 SL. Both car types being genuine classics, the right price availability and safe.

Take a look here for ref'

Another option, albeit left field, would be a Scimitar GTC...though the safety side needs to be thought through...

Or, if the soft top option is not a pre-requisite, why not a Porsche 944? They have a splendid completely removable sun roof and are excellent value for money.

My old Alpine had bench at the back. I used it for my dog but plenty of people from SAOC had rear seats and seat belts fitted.

This picture is a Tiger but the body is the same.
