My 1979 Oselli 1995cc MGB has a gearbox issue - it is starting to crunch in 3rd.

It is due to using it at my local sprint track in competitions .

I am considering purchasing a 1965 non overdrive gearbox as a replacement.

The questions are :

• Will it fit.
• What extra will I need.
• Will the increased power av. 128bhp be a problem.

Thanks.

a 65 box wouldn't be my first choice as it's only a three syncro box.
Look for a 69- four syncro would be preferable.

If it has to be the 65 then you need to check a couple of things just to be sure.
1, spigot dia. That's on the front of the input shaft and slips in to the the end of the crank
2, prop-shaft length. The early models have a different type of diff with a longer nose and therefore the prop length needs checking.
3, position of the gear stick through the tunnel. I think you should be okay on this one but best check the measurements.

The rest should be okay.

If you're not in a hurry I have a 4 sync in one of my B's that I was thinking of upgrading to O/D but I'm unlikely to get to that this year.

Thanks for the advice.

I have brought a 4 sync box & prop + mounting bracket for £30.

Which I know now is a 3 sync box.

Thanks

If you got a good 3 synchro box for £30 you did well but unfortunately it won't fit your car.

The spigot bush size is workable but the real problems are that it won't mate to the engine backplate plus you'll need the correct cross member.

If 3rd gear synchro is the only problem with your existing box then that's relatively cheap and easy to fix.
