It's a 2001 MPI F, no air con or ABS.

There's a strange click coming from somewhere in the front of the car. It's not speed related as I get it when moving or stationary.

The best way to describe it is that it's like the sound of a car with ACC when it clicks on and off.

The other day in the heat, the engine bay cooler came on, but there was no front fan. Today I sat with the car running and the bonnet open to try and determine the source of the tick. Sod's law and it didn't click. I gave the slam panel a light thump and the front fan came on.

Coincidence or did I do something?

My first thought was that it could be the fan sticking for some reason and that my light thump freed it. When it ran it ran normally sounding fine, no blades clattering into anything. It stopped after a few minutes just like it should.

I thought that maybe it had been stuck, but on the drive home the clicking started again.

The temp gauges are fine and have been throughout all the clicking. The coolant is also fine. No loss of level.

Is there some way to force the fan on to check its operation without letting the car run until
It's hot?

Could it be an air bubble in the system? The click is not unlike the sound you sometimes get in pipe work in houses.

Is getting access to the fan a nose cone off job?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Might not be the issue but I get a clicking noise from my charcoal canister. Have you tried unplugging it and seeing if it eliminates the sound?

What's the charcoal canister? I've never heard of it.

Basically a fuel filter with a solenoid valve (hence the clicking) I think. Looks a little like this:

Thanks for that, you learn something new every day.

I'll check it out though predictably for a MGF, it's not making the noise any more.

Apologies as I didn't realise you said it was coming from the front of the car. Do you know where the relays/fuses are located?

I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as the car is running correctly, you say the fan kicks in when it should every time?

Yeah, bith fans - at the front and in the engine bay both work OK.

The car's not getting much use now it's winter but it seemed fine last week in a 50-odd mile roof down blast round Northumberland.

The temps are always spot-on.

I've had five of these over the last decade and I've learnt to be very tolerant of their ways.

As you suggest, I'm not working too much about it. They may change cinebrhe summer.
