Guys, thought I'd share this with you to help any others completing a high spec' V8 conversion. The insurance was up for renewal and I kept having a back of the mind niggle as to 1. the cost of components to properly convert to a V8, and 2. the cost of components should the car be in an accident and a major rebuild be necessary i.e. new shell, engine, gearbox, full respray et al. This got me thinking as to the agreed value required...and knowing a couple of good MG specialists who charge £50-55K for a new V8. So I picked up the phone to the friendly boys at Hagerty on Wednesday explaining the situation...really, how much would it cost to build a new V8 roadster to exactly the same spec'. After a few discussions and emailing of lots of build photographs...with Hagerty's ever helpful Mo and Chris and the underwriters having a good perusal of the pics, we agreed a car value of £50,000.

Now, £50k may seem a few squidlets for a V8 conversion but how much would it cost to rebuild? Happy with the £50k agreed value I then asked for the annual premium...3,000 miles with all the usual Hagerty bells and whistles. I was uber pleased when they confirmed £300.86 fully comp' smile

So, it's food for thought when completing these costly conversions and I'd definitely recommend Mo and Chris at Hagerty. Both good guys in understanding required agreed value, not going crazy with the premium and both super enthusiastic to help with a different insurance requirement. Hagerty can be found here https://www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/

Useful stuff - thanks Andrew.

A nice figure too given your hard work (irrelevant I know).

Hi Sam, yes it's an interesting process that we should all take on board, namely, how much would it cost to replace our cars. Understanding how classic car values have risen over the past few years, £50k for a special BV8 seems exceptional value for money.

In other news, I heard that Frontline have full order books for the next 2-3 years and that next year they're planning on releasing a 5.0ltr BV8 version. Most likely an LS engine based and one can imagine this being a £100k car. If correct, £50k for our correctly executed jalopies could even be undervalued. For balance, I have spent £20K in parts on my B and in many areas it's technically better the Frontline cars...though their interiors are of a much higher standard...I wanted one of these but could not warrant the price, may be in the future. The following is my outline spec' should others need to increase their agreed value.

4.0ltr V8 Griffith engine with modified inlet, plenum, ACT Carbon trumpets, uprated Bosch injectors +++
Lightweight high output alternator and starter motor
RV8 manifolds and modified Superports st/st exhaust
Mulberry 4" oversized full header alloy radiator
Rebuilt/New R380 Gearbox
Cosworth Viscous LSD
Hoyle Suspension front and rear
HiSpec Motorsport Billet Calipers + disc + M1144 pads front
Ford Caliper + discs + M1144 pads rear
Goodrich st/st brakelines throughout
Frontline injection fuel tank
V8250 designed low+high pressure fuel supply installation
Frontline front spoiler [modified]
15" Minilites + Yokahama C Drives [same rubber as Frontline]
Smith Prism/Flight gauges
Mirrortrim Leather Interior and Carpet
Dynamat sound deadening throughout
MGC Bonnet
Schroth anti-submarine harnesses
Proprietary Twin Roll Over Hoop

Financially, the area that really increases cost is the ancillary parts, fasteners and the little extra components. I've kept full records of these and it's amazing how quickly the budget increases. I'm currently searching for alloy billet dust caps for the Minilites...can't find the right size anywhere so may have to have these made; if anyone knows where these may be available please p.m. me.

Don't think I need to up my insurance at the moment. This year all I've done is just replace the oil filler cap, £3.75!

Talking of dust caps, who would have thought there is such a vast and random choice:

Did you say billet or bullet!
