Hi all,

My Boss has a jaguar S-type 3.0l petrol with a 6 speed Auto 'box. It has started to slip and jolt quite badly. He has taken it to a jag place nearby and apparently it isn't the well documented software problem.

Is it likely to be a new 'box?

Can someone recommended a good (cheap) place to get it fixed in the Surrey area, or even parts of hants or w. sussex, he is based in Godalming.

TIA, James

Your best bet is to take the car to TLJaguar RG40 4TS
Speek to Tom on 0118-976-2899 or 07966-267806

Top man when it comes to Jaguar's in the area, good rates and won't tell you have the dearest option

+1 for Tom at TL Jaguar. Coming from Godalming myself, it's an easy journey over to him from here and he knows his stuff.

Not suggesting that this would solve his problem but at 100,000 miles, my 4.2 with the 6 speed box started to get a bit out of sorts. I've just had the fluid changed (don't believe the 'sealed for life nonsense')and it's made a huge difference. Changes sweetly when it's supposed to, much sharper kick down and generally much happier with life. With labour and VAT, about £240.

I agree with that

Personally I feel the gearbox oil should be changed at the BIG service at 60K. Sealed for life is untill it goes BANG

That's what I thought TLJ would look at as a second call, first being plugging in the computer to find relevant fault codes

LFB531,

I too have an S Type 4.2 V8 SE. I've had it since 14 miles (was a demonstrator...not much demonstration use, however!) and now it's at 102,000. You mat be interested to learn that I had a persistent gearbox problem: a whoosh noise when changing down under acceleration without the kickdown. As a result:

30,000 miles: replacement gearbox
44,000 miles: another replacement gearbox
57,000 miles: gearbox taken apart and all seals replaced.

All done under warranty without any hassle whatsoever.

Since then there's been no gearbox problems at all. I am thinking of having the oil changed at the 110,000 miles service.

By the way, have you changed the diff oil? I've not but I'm considering having this done too. This is supposd to be sealed for life but I have my doubts about the validity of this claim.

Good to know another PHer has the same model as me...they does seem to be very few about.

I bought mine with 80k registered, a one owner main dealer serviced car and no notes about 'box issues with the history. I just felt that it wasn't as good/smooth as it was but to be sure, handed it over to the outfit I mentioned above for an opinion. They were adamant that the oil SHOULD be changed and they were right. I'm back to where it was, ultra smooth and no hesitation at all.

I guess as your 'box is only at half my mileage, a change would be pure precaution but even with the fluid at £25 per litre wholesale, it's a lot cheaper than a new one! The diff has not been mentioned. They're swapping out the rear roll bar links this week before I do an 1800 mile round trip over the weekend so full silence should be resumed.

Overall, a great machine. As you say, not that many around but mine has no badges so if they're all like that, pretty hard to spot.

May be worth changing the diff oil, they also take a hammering
TLJaguar can also fit the Limited Slip Diff into the S-Type now, makes a big differance to getting the power on the road

Another item that is now being recomended by TLJ is to also change the Supercharger oil

I had a look at www.howmanyleft.co.uk and there were only 2 ! I think this must be due to a recording error by Jaguar dealers when they were first registered, and particularly the "SE" bit was probably omitted.

Thanks, Norman.

I do have Tom on my radar for this kind of job. He's maybe 15-20 miles from where I live. However, I'll have to wait until the end of the year when my warranty finally runs out before I can use other than a JMD for any work without jeopardising the warranty.

As far as the diff oil change is concerned, I am in a bit of a dilemma: do I change the oil after it's very long period of not being touched and in doing so bring about the diff's demise, or do I leave it untouched as there's no apparent problem nor has there ever been one? I'm inclined to leave things as they are.

Can someone please help me with something. I'm not sure if I'm in the right place but I'll give it a go. My s type jaguar 2.4 v6 keeps going into limp mode. It drives perfect until it does it. I did read that it's a common problem with these jags and that it could be the battery needs either fully charging or changing ?? Can anyone help with this and put my mind to rest that it's not a new gearbox i need !@ thanks in advance. And it's a 2003 03 plate.

It may be battery related. If the battery is getting on a bit, a new one certainly can't hurt.

It's worth investing in a code reader though. There will be logged fault codes. Reading these and trying to interpret their cause is more instructive than just stabbing in the dark smile

Curiously, reading back over the above, both output shaft seals on my S-Type diff have gone at once.

Can't wait to remove that to change the seals rolleyes

A little lacking in info. Does it tell you anything about why it is in limp home? I had an issue with the ABS sensor, it threw an ABS warning swiftly followed by a huge gearbox clunk and I was stuck in fourth gear. All it took was to replace the sensor and clean the ring.
