I'm off to buy a cheapo dog carrier, an x-type is nearby for a good price. Just wondered if the 2.5 is a dog (pun!!) or worth it to house a long haired german shepherd on travels.

Thanks

I don't think they are too bad, heard things about transfer boxes. Sorry I can't help more, I'm not too clued up about them.

I have recently bought a "Dog Wagon". I looked at all the normal ones and decided I wanted a Volvo V70 T5, unfortunately these were slightly out of budget as I wanted to spend £1k maximum. I then started looking at Saab's and realised they are superb value for money, judging by Jag prices im thinking your looking to spend somewhere in the region of £3,500, In Saab terms that would get you something like this:

2005 Diesel Saab 9-5

Or something a bit more loopy and cheaper:

Decent car, manual should have no issues, check sump gasket for leaks, not major but is a pain in the arse to repair.
Comfortable and nothing like a Mondeo to drive, despite what all the Clarkson wannabes on here tell you.

No worries, thing that always confuses me is the 1995-01 Audi A4 platform shared with the Passat of the time, and no-one ever says "Err it's just a Passat". Check out ARonline for a bit of back story to the X-type, it might (but I'm not sure) have a list of things to look out for.

I was looking at sub £1k Aero's! I bottled it and went with a FSH 2.3T SE for £500.

Go on you know you want too...

Do check for any noises/leaks from the transfer box and propshaft. It's a £1500 job to get them done - but worth it to keep the car smile

Look up under the plastic sill covers for rot, they can go badly here if drain holes haven't been cleared.

Other than that, great cars with lots of cheap parts available, but the 2.5 is shorter on power and drinks as much as the 3.0.

I quite like our x-type, the 2.5 engine is the best feature. Manual Box nice too. Not much space in it and nowhere near as comfy as the Safrane that we also have. Biggest problem for me is cleaning it. It comes up nice but the paint takes a lot of work to polish etc and looks terrible again almost straight away. None of the other 7 cars on our drive have such difficult to look after paint. Bizarre one really, I wonder whether it has had some sort of 'treatment' in the past. Still, it's a nice enough car.

My dad got one not long back, he loves it. Needed a few bushes on the tie-rods changing (common issue), and had a leak from the transfer box (again, common issue), but the transfer box can be sorted for about £30 if you're handy with spanners so don't let it put you off if you find one that is!

Especially as the Jag cost to fix it is about £1600, so you can negotiate a fair discount hehe

I think the Mondeo is actually the better car to be honest, with it being a Jag you expect it to be really good and I was a bit disappointed, with the Mondeo, it's just a Mondeo but they drive really well.

It's 4wd , completely unlike a Mondeo.

Bought a seat Leon......definitely something wrong with me. The jag was ropey. Saab turbo didn't pull but a lovely little Leon 110 tdi was nestling in the corner. 1 owner 95k and as i had the folding had a phenomenal deal........Bugger. Chip the shepherd fits. :-)

I'm going to resurrect this one as I'm looking at getting an X-type 2.5 V6 AWD.

The AWD is crucial. I live in arse end of no where but want something comfortable for m-way cruising that is AWD . I don't want a 4X4, I have one of those already.

I'm looking at a manual one, Alfa ownership taught me about the cost of replacing an auto gearbox.....

Alternatives, Volvo XC90, Subaru Legacy/Outback, Audi All-road/Quattro A4, are either more expensive or a bit boring.

From what I can make out the ones >2004 are OK, but <2004 had alot of issues. Anything I should look out for when buying?

You'll hear the whining from the transmission if there's anything wrong with it. The 2.5 isnt particularly good, as in it has roughly the same economy as the 3.0 and isnt as fast. If you can find a decent 3.0 then it's worth getting over the 2.5

I've owned a manual one and it felt better manual, as in, I didnt sit there driving it thinking I wished it had an auto box. You can pretty much do anything you want in third, the low down torque will pull you from around 10 mph to about 80'ish if you want

The AWD system isnt the same as a Subaru in feel, the X Type can be a bit weighty at the front and you notice it throwing it into a roundabout for example.

Most of them will say BOOT OPEN on the dash, if it's never done it, it will at some point. The harness gets kinked on the boot hinge and it's a 2 minute soldering job. If anything goes wrong on the engine there's very little space to get to it, so it could be an expensive fix. The boot is shallow and there's not that much rear room. And it'll eat tyres.

ETA - they'll sit nicely at 90'ish without much if any noise. You'll be able to watch the fuel needle going down though

I had a 2001 2.5 V6 AWD when it was around 10 years old. Bought very cheap - it wasn't a good example and hadn't been well looked after.
Other than seized brake calipers, a few issues with suspension bushes and reverse sensors playing up, I don't remember anything big going wrong. It stalled a couple of times when I first bought it, but after a hard drive it was fine.

I've owned a few Mondeos and have a soft spot for them, so I thought the X-Type would be a "Mondeo+"... It actually felt very different, but in a good way! The balance of comfort/performance was good and the Ford 2.5 V6 has a really nice growl at high revs. Also I believe Jaguar used an improved water pump (metal blades) which didn't break and kill the engine like the Mondeo version liked to do.

The AWD system really impressed me. It came with very cheap tyres but even on really icy roads or loose gravel you had to try hard to get wheelspin.
