Wonder if anyone can help,

My uncle has recently had the power steering pump and rack replaced on his S Type but now the steering doesn't centralise or return to centre after turning, Normally you can release the wheel after turning and it would centre rather than release and it stays in the direct in of the turn. No vibrations are felt in the steering when turning

Any suggestions as to what the problem is or where it lies?

Thanks,

Jaguar steve

Same thing happening if you turn in either direction and only started after the rack was replaced? I'd suspect the front suspension geometry is incorrect and if it's bad enough to defeat the usual self centering action both within the rack and the angles built into the front suspension then it's very incorrect indeed.

Have a 4 wheel alignment done before you shred the front tyres to bits. Even if geometry is slightly out of spec. correcting it will transform the way the car handles and drives, and you need to be sure it's spot on before looking elsewhere. Google alignmycar or Hunter garage equipment for more info.

Yes, it started after the rack was done, it was fine for a day or so then started not centering. It's doing it in both directions, very odd feeling being able to go round a roundabout with hands off the wheel.

He's taking it in today so I'll mention it to him, as usual PH comes up with the knowledge, thanks!

Faulty new rack with too much preload on the pinion would be my guess.
