So I got a pleasent surprise on the insurance front (was previously looking at 4.0 Sports) and am thinking "in for a penny"....
What do I need to know?
I've heard fuel is horrendous but I've just sold my TVR so am used to silly MPG, plus it will only be a weekend car!

Rust will be the main concern. Check all over the body especially the rear wheel arches, round the front and rear screens, and bottoms of the doors and wings. A hard driven xjr will have shagged its brakes, tyres and suspension components but the engine and driveline should be good for 100k with reasonable maintainence. Parts prices are not unreasonable. Insurance is usually cheaper than Ze Chermans too.
Essential to buy the very best example you can find. Have a look on carsandclassics, and the Jaguar World magazine classifieds. Joining the JEC might be a good move too

Been looking at x300's for a while, but until today thought an "R" would be a no go! so familiar ish with the foibles of them in general. Guess it's just a case of looking even harder than usual, bearing in mind they are likely to have been driven harder! Are the brakes unique to the XJR or the same as the 4.0 cars? also same question re. shocks and general suspension bits. Also is the gearbox the 4 speed unit or the 5 speed switchable as per 4.0 cars?

The suspension on the XJR's is much harder. They don't give the magic carpet ride you expect of a Jaguar. If you look on Jag Lovers you'll find copies of the brochures. Not sure whether the gearbox is the same as the 4L but it isn't the Mercedes unit that the SC V8 4.0's got. try http://www.jag-lovers.org/brochures/xjr95.html

Porkies from Browns lane or just very optimistic??!!

Or around 25%, but I don't try to think of it that way

Porkies from Browns lane or just very optimistic??!! Then you hit seventy with WOT and you understand the bit from Star Treck. But even on a light throttle they were pretty brisk. When I bought my Sport, the salesman was keen to "upsell" me and suggested I took an XJR for a spin. A mile or so down the road from the showroom was a village with a Gestapo camera in. I remember driving carefully through checking the speedo and the road ahead, 30, all's clear, 30, all's still clear, 60 - s*&t where did that come from. We didn't like the ride, else I might have gone for it. Good luck with your hunt. They don't have to be rusty.

Parts prices for all XJs are pretty similar unless you have Brembo brakes or the CATS suspension option. The X300 gearbox is a 4 speed one, the later V8s had the 5 speed 'boxes, a ZF one for the n/a cars amd a Mercedes one for the supercharged variants

If memory serves I don't think they were but I'm not 100% sure TBH - I gave all my X300 literature and workshop manuals to the guy who bought my old X300 and that was some time ago. I included comment about Brembo and CATS to cover any XJ that was fitted with those options as parts for those specific options are ruiniously expensive and as far as I'm aware OEM only.

The X300 XJR brakes are the same as the standard X300's - the Brembos came later on later X308 XJRs.
I am 99.9% sure CATS was introduced on the X308 too, and the X300 uses standard dampers.

Just spotted an LPG converted car in the PH classifieds..
Would LPG be a good thing? I know it will save a few pennies but will it put people off? non originality etc?

I understand that the Rs are more prone to get through the cylinder heads than the NA - tend to go at about 150k.

Not bad theironduke said: Wallet Opening Tragedy Yes probably that too. I used to have a GT4 with a boost gauge which I always thought was meant to tell you how fast your wallet was disappearing down the exhaust pipe.
