Leigh, great to hear your car is sorted, good work.

A new battery was recommend earlier in this thread, but I've not gone down that route yet as the old girl starts on the button. I do know though that a dying battery can cause electrical gremlins.

Did you have any old battery symptoms before deciding to swap in a new one or did it seem ok?

Hi Matt
Not really, it started first time etc, but I'd been doing short trips all week in it (5 mile commute) with lights, seats, screen stereo on etc, so I guess that was testing the battery. They said it wasn't holding charge properly, so I changed it. If original, it's over seven years old, so best to change it I think.

He also said the rear bushes are worn (joy!), but it doesn't make any noises or knocks at all, and feels tight to drive, so that can wait a month or so. No mention on the last main dealer service invoice or any MOT advisories, and they were only 3500 miles and four months ago, so can't be that bad?

Yeah, I've heard that bushes can go quite quickly on these cars.

I've replaced the battery on mine today, so will get a good indication about this gearbox fault. If it continues to happen again, further investigation will have to ensue.

Out of interest, what battery did you go for? Eurocarparts had a 20% online coupon via PH, do I upgraded Bosch S3 in there to a Bosch S5.

My two peneth worth... I bought an OEM battery from Jaguar and found the price fairly competitive with Halfords. The only aftermarket things I will fit on to a car of this stature are light bulbs and tyres...

I did call Jaguar and they wanted approx double for an identical spec battery. You make a fair point Miagloo, but seeing as Jaguar didn't actually make the battery, I'm happy to fit a branded product in line or uprated vs OEM spec.

Bosch is pretty well regarded in this field, and for all I know the Jag stickers cover a Bosch one!

WOW Double, really, the buggers!!! Sod that mate, yes buy the bosch. The prices I initially recieved were not double but more expensive, I had a word with the service manager at Guy Salmon and they cut me a deal.... I think I paid about £60 in the end, I think the Halfords price was about £45...

My specialist quoted me £89 for a Varta battery - he says he always uses those. I could have shopped around, but I needed the car for a weekend away and time was against me, and the price seemed ok. What he didn't mention was that it was £89 + vat...

Anyway, no more problems after 400+ miles, apart from a dodgy parking sensor that gives random beeps when the weather's cold.

Thread update - I've spent a month and 1,500 miles with the new battery, and the gearbox is faultless, no error messages biggrin

Yup, and now that the early niggles seem to have ironed out, I'm enjoying it even more. I pop back to the readers car thread every month to update:

Good to hear. Yep, still enjoying it thanks. My rear parking sensors aren't working, but touch wood it's ok otherwise. I've now had the alloys refurbed, the rear bumper resprayed (a few nasty scuffs that were bugging me), and given it a machine polish all over, so now it looks quite tidy. Still not keen on the 18" wheels, so will look to upgrade them this summer.

My cars always end up in better nick when I sell them than when I buy them... rolleyes

Sounds nice, what about a few pics?

How are you going to sort the sensor issue? That just happened on my S-Type (after 71k miles it has to be said.)

I haven't taken any pics since it was spruced up, there are some old pics on Matt's thread here:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Regarding the sensors, I read that you can hear them clicking if you put your hand near them so can identify the faulty one, but I just get the 3 second beep when I engage reverse, after which they are switched off, so I'm not sure! It's a bumper off job, so I may well just replace them all, you can pick them up on ebay new for about twenty or thirty quid.

Hi there, really interesting to read all the comments about this topic. I have recently purchased my XJ6 V6 Sovereign and must say I love it... however I have been having very similar problems.

The previous owner used to run the Jag daily from Oxford to Coventry however I now have it parked up more than use it. On the occasions I do use it I get the Gearbox fault, parking brake fault and cruise control fault lights on. Had a Jag specialist look at it and the diagnostics showed that there was a 12v battery fault on everything. Checked the battery and it was basically dead, just enough oomph left to start her up.

Anyone have any advice on a great battery which will have enough power to keep the car running smoothly even though its parked up for a fortnight at a time... I have been recommended a Bosch battery.. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks Jane biggrin

Little used batteries always benefit form a trickle charge. You can buy a battery conditioner or just use a normal battery charger on a timer.

I use a cheap battery charger with a inline 2 amp fuse hard wired into the battery on my XJ which is set to give a couple of hours charge a day. It takes seconds to disconnect when I want to use the car and seconds to plug back in when I get home. Sometimes my car is not used for weeks and its always ready to start with little voltage drop so I never get any fault messages.

Jane, welcome to PH and great car choice!

The battery I went for is the Bosch S5 - so far, so good.

Hi and thanks Matt and Jaguar Steve.. great idea re the trickle charger

I have now got a new battery on it but still getting (well even more) fault messages frown Nearly every warning light seems to appear now. Air suspension, dsc, parkbrake, cruise you name it it shows! lol

Apparently there could now be a bad connection... getting it looked at on Thursday again. Fingers crossed it can be sorted easily... miss my car biggrin

Also does anyone know where to get the centre consol chargers from... usb/phone/cd changer box etc? Mine needs a new one.

Here are some photos of my 'baby'!!

Oh dear, not good news. Just had the Jag guy come and look at my car again and he now thinks the alternator needs to be replaced... still it is the original and has had a good life :/! The more worrying thing now is since changing the battery, when turning on the windscreen wipers it cuts the car out, everything else works fine.

Worried that it may have spiked... does anyone have any advice about this... its something I know nothing about frown Help!!
