oh dear, seems I cant come on this page without ruffling some feathers... to give me candid retort though the example mentioned is akin to saying Vauxhalls are fast cars because of the Lotus Carlton.. one swallow doesn't make a summer.
No feathers ruffled V12. My opinions however don't come from an enthusiasm for a particular brand or model, they come from a helluva lot of years of working on all these different so-called performance cars and having to live with all the problems they create and solve these problems on behalf of the owners.I am frequently asked by customers, friends and family what car should I buy. This of course places me firmly in the position of pig in the middle. If I recommend a particular car and it goes wrong I'm in deep st. What I would never do is recommend a Jaguar to anyone, but I make it quite clear that this is a personal opinion based on years of experience. At the end of the day if they then go on and buy a Jaguar they are doing so with their eyes wide open.
All modern cars are seriously flawed in design, regardless of make. There are several reasons for this, but political pressures on car designers are up at the top. Emissions are number 1 priority, and the thirst for gadgets, almost all of which are electronically controlled. Many of these systems are integrated to cut down production costs, resulting in a breakdown becoming a diagnostic nightmare, even for a dealer with full equipment.
My experience with Jaguar has shown that they frequently do not carry out development work to anything like a satisfactory standard; so much is missed. If that doesn't bother you and you want to take a chance with these cars, then fine. I don't look at a car for the glamour or looks that impress. My take is on how well engineered it is and the way it drives. This includes long term reliability and durability.
If my lottery ticket came up I would not buy a new car, they don't interest me in the slightest. Car development in terms of how far we go with technology in a vehicle before that technology becomes a liability and hence counter-productive reached its peak in the mid to late nineties; the reason my daily driver is a '99 A6 2.4. I wouldn't go any newer than that.

Behave yourself. Take a look at the article on here about the Group B Quattro at the hands of 67 year old Blomqist and tell me Audis don't have soul.
J
OK, what Audi since the Quattro has soul then :-)J
But even that had its quirks, but then sticking the engine that far out the front was likely to give it certain characteristics. The next generation were as dull as ditch water to drive if memory serves me well.

Your response reminds me of Monty Python. "What have the Romans ever done for us?"

Now I'm going to be forced to remember the RS2
All right... all right... but apart from the quattro and the RS2 what have the Romans ever done for us?

This is exactly how I feel, only I'd never be able to put it into words so well. I look at modern cars and wonder how the hell they are going to be realistic propositions to run as classics in 20 or 30 years....
