Hi

I've been interested in buying a C-type replica for some time (sadly the budget won't stretch to a real one!) and have been doing some research on the originals and what would constitute a good replica. I want something that has the look and feel of a real car, similar drive and good detailing. I appreciate however that it won't be the real thing.

What do you think are the essential ingredients to make a good replica and what should one avoid? Are there any resources you can point me too so that I can educate myself?

I think, after looking at a great many replicas, that the original Proteus cars are the closest to the real thing. I have a Proteus D type kit (the last of the 10 he made) for sale if you want one

I have driven and worked on a few C type replicas, including the Proteus, which was a fine car. Have also done a lot of work and driven a Proteus XJ13, which was pretty spectacular, and just as terrifying as you would expect a replica of an underdeveloped prototype to be!!! I feel that a C type replica should be accurate as far as the spaceframe, wheelbase and track, wheels, tyres and running gear are concerned, and should absolutely NOT have independent rear suspension. Having a GRP outer skin matters less as you dont have to live with all the gravel dents in the wheel arches that you get with an alloy car. With our tar-and-granite-sprayed roads that's an important consideration. woiuld absolutely love to build one, much much cooler than a cobra too!

You need to really wait to hear from Lowdrag on this one. Not only has he personally been through probably the most complex C-Type recreation, which coincidently is also for sale currently at the same place. But he's also written extensively on the subject for the JDC.
Now his "Lowdrag" 52 C-Type was built at CKL, but they used a chassis and midsection from one of the companies that specialises in making C-Types, the 52 cars had different front and rear bodies and many detail differences, which is the work CKL did and I was lucky enough to see occasionally taking shape in their workshop. If you hunt back through forum over the years you'll find at least two long topics discussing the build and somewhere embedded in one of those he said who's mid section was used.

He's more often to be found on the Classic car forum these days. Where there's another of his epic project postings as his E-Type is being lovingly put back together.
