Hi all, so I've just aquired a x300 3.2 executive and it's lovely but I got down to it this morning only to find that the offside rear was about half down. I pumped it back up and went down to Kwik Fit (as it's Sunday) and they had a look at it. Seems like it has a cut in the sidewall. I guess this is game over for that tyre (the car is currently on the space saver spare)?

I'm trying to work out what my options are, it's got 235/60 on the rears rather than 225/55 as per the handbook so if I replace one with the handbook tyre I guess that means the both would have to be swapped right?

Quik Fit wanted £150 plus for a 'Capital' (whoever that may be) which seems ridiculous (even their own website quotes much less). In addition to this all the 235s I see seem to be marked as 4x4 tyres, is this an issue?

I'm wondering what the best move is, should I just get a part worn or is this a sign that it needs 2 new rear tyres (an expense I could do without!). The other rear still has a about 5mm of tred on it so it seems like a shame to loose it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Great Motors! I had the 3.2 exec also and seriously regret letting it go, a great car to waft around in. As for the tyres, I would shop around and go for the correct sizes, you should get them for £100 a corner for a budget brand. I Wouldn't use Kwik fit, that tend to take the p!ss big time. Wrong size tyres can give hassle on these cars. I hope you get as much enjoyment as I did with mine.
Pete.

You don't say what size of wheel

I don't usually say get second hand tyres but in this case that maybe the best to get the car back on the road

That will then give you a chance to do some homework on sizes and costs to change all four for the correct ones

Thanks both, its on 16" rims. I think I might get a couple of correct sized second hand ones for now. I've only just got the car so I don't want to sink too much into it right now just in case there is an expensive failure just round the corner!

I'm pretty annoyed that the 'new' used tyres that were part of the sale are the wrong size. I'm sure I've got no chance with the (from a residential house) dealer however.

Any idea what I should be expecting to pay for some (not too bad) second hand 225/55/16s?

Also any recommendations for good tyre places in North London would be greatly appreciated!

Do I need to worry overly about the speed rating?

A X300 fitted with 16" wheels should have either 225/55/16 or 225/60/16 size tyres. Speed ratings were Z and load index 98, but Z has now been superseeded with W.

Fitting anything else may compromise your insurance.

I'd avoid secondhand tyres. You have no idea what you're fitting or how it's been treated or if there's anything wrong with it. On top of that XJs are very sensitive to wheel and tyre imbalances.

As EE suggests, have a look at the Kuhmo KH31, or Falken ZE912. Both are good mid range tyres.

I ended up getting a couple of new Conti Premium Contact 2's as they were relatively well priced (for what they are) and should last me a long time. Anything else was either off brand scariness or would have had to have been ordered so I factored in my time as well into the decision.

It feels like a different car on the new rubber mind! Even though it was the rears that have been changed the steering feels more positive and the car feels much grippier in this terrible rain we're having today.

Hopefully they will turn out to be a good choice!

If the vehicle is on comfort suspension (black dampers) it should have 7Jx16 wheels with 225/60 R16 tyres. If the car is on sport suspension (green dampers) it should have 8Jx16 wheels with 225/55 R16 tyres.

The tyres to use are the approved ones in the handbook.

Interesting, I've always thought my 3.2 executive to be more bumpy than I'd like, I'll check the dampers.

I need 4 new boots, 225/60/16. Totally focused on comfort rather than handling.

Any reccommendations for a squishy tyre?

I've just had to replace the front boots on my X300 and missed getting hold of the last couple of P6000s and so went with P7s and they don't ride like the originals :-(

I've got P4000 matching set, I haven't looked at the date codes but suspect they are quite old, the car has only done 58k miles.

I need comfy.

Thanks - are you running 225/55? I want 60 series and I can't see the ZV5 in 225/60?

Yes, 225/55/R16 all round. About £100 each fitted.
