Heard a rough diesel sound while out and about the other day and turned to see a Jag XF coming by.

Not only that but it had just the single tailpipe.

The driver rinsing everything he could out of it.

He'd obviously just managed to squeeze into the (white) XF and climb out of the Audi I'm sure he'd been previously driving...

For me it looked and sounded cheap and no longer premium.

I think the XF is one of the best looking saloons around, it's not like a Jaguar of days gone by but I appreciate they've had to move with the time.

I have to say I'd have the diesel, it's not exactly fast but has ample power for a daily driver.

Poor guy works hard to buy a jaguar after dreaming of owning one as a kid and treetops doesn't appreciate it and mocks him on the internet. I bet he is (not) having a little cry at home.

What do you drive treetops?

You get idiots in every kind of car, nothing new smile

Personally I am not a fan of the XF, or any Jag for that matter. Not sure what it is but they just do nothing for me. If it was my money I would get an F10 instead!

One tail pipe is a 2.2D.

Not a bad car necessarily. But not necessarily what I'd go for.

The horror of it.

Presumably you are aware of the previous owners attempts at maintaining a "premium" range - I think it was called the x type....

The 2.2d wouldn't be my choice either. Actually none of the black pump models would be, but I understand why they exist.

Most diesels sound rubbish. The JLR engine is no better or worse in this respect.

A SAAB (Aero petrol if that matters) I have no need for anything else, bricks and mortar is where its at for me but that's another story.

My point was I felt this has cheapened what was supposed to be a premium model.

Can you imagine putting a 2.2 diesel engine with a single tailpipe in an XJ of old?

In recession white and being rinsed around basically summed it up for me as the "new AUDI" for exec man / woman.

I would simply shudder at the thought of new Jag XF in white!

And somewhere in the UK the guy that just got a 2.2 Diesel Jag as a comfortable commuter has just got home.

He's parked it inside his heated garage, in his 5 bedroom detached home next to his TVR and Ferrari. He pauses for a moment, thinking of the strange chap that laughed at his brand new Jaguar and wonders quite what was wrong with him.

Wow do you have this weeks lottery numbers as well? You'll go far with that kind of insight...

I'm always amused by these kind of posts especially when you check the posters garage out to find er nothing....

He's parked it inside his garage, in his 3 bedroom semi-detached new build Barrat home (full of iPods, iPads and LCD TVs) next to his wife's (financed) Vauxhall Zafira. He pauses for a moment, thinking of the strange chap that laughed at his brand new Jaguar and thinks "damn, I should have bought that MX5".

Presumably you are also shuddering at all the 4-cylinder diesel S-Class Mercs that they have sold across Europe (S250CDi).

they made the 2.2 to appeal to company car buyers, which it did, so now they can use the money from that to make cars like the F Type.

The 2.2 is a little rough, but the other engines in the range are tremendous. Add that to the looks, and it knocks the Germans flat.

I've just ordered the same again. Miles better reliability than any of the German marques I've owned.

I had an XF 3.0d V6 and loved it.

I don't think I could bring myself to buy a 2.2d 163 model, but the 2.2d 200 one is quicker than the original 2.7d. Truth be told, an estate 2.2d is probably the logical pick of the XF range.

And no, I wouldn't really care if someone I neither knew, nor cared about the existence of, thought it meant I was cheap/aspiring to own a premium car, like the Audi it would hypothetically be replacing. Or the BMW before that. Or Jaguar before that. Or Jaguar before that. Or Mondeo before that. Or Audi before that. I'm sorry, I've lost my train of thought. OP, what was your point again?

My Daily drive is an XJR but when its in the garage (which unfortunately is quite often) they give me XF's to drive. I've had just about every model over the last year and have to say the 2.2d is just nasty. Its very underpowered for the size of car and you have to thrash it to get anything out of it. It sounds like a tractor , vibrates a lot and doesnt suit the auto box at all. It just cant ever decide which gear to be in so keeps hunting around.

Its the only big car I've driven in many years that has to change down when crusing uphill on the motorway to maintain pace. I have seen the same behavior from a 1 year old model with 30k on the clock and a brand new delivery mileage model I drove just last week,

The V6 3.0d is much better performance wise and you cant argue with 50mpg on a cruise but I still prefer my petrol V8 .

To me its not a proper jag, it feels more like a dressed up Mondeo and unfortunately they get a few things wrong - The steering wheel controls are nasty (compare to my old model XJ) and the computer / sat nav is a bit of a joke. On the plus side the DAB radio is pretty good.

Unfortunately Jaguar just havent moved on in terms of technology and ergonomics, and while I was thinking about replacing my XJR with an XKR it shares the same computer and controls so I will be looking elsewhere.

Having said all that I havent had a go in an F type yet and it looks like it has different controls so that may be a direction I can go in.

You've raised expectations treetops. Can we see a picture of your designer pad? You're obviously someone of substance and great taste.
