A SAAB (Aero petrol if that matters) I have no need for anything else, bricks and mortar is where its at for me but that's another story.

My point was I felt this has cheapened what was supposed to be a premium model.

Can you imagine putting a 2.2 diesel engine with a single tailpipe in an XJ of old?

In recession white and being rinsed around basically summed it up for me as the "new AUDI" for exec man / woman.

I would simply shudder at the thought of new Jag XF in white!
when ever i see a saab i always think wow look at that tt trying hard in his tarted up vauxhall caviler i bet he goes home to count all his 20p peices in hope of another buy to let so hes comfortable in his retirement when he can look back on his life and remember all those god times he didnt spend any money as has no memories.
Aaarrrggghh
Its so true!

If i was doing 50-60 motorway miles a day, and it was a choice between a golf GTD and a 2.2d xf I know where my money would go...
Yes, of course, but some people need the extra space offered by the XF. wink

LOL

I made the choice when I had 6k to play with last year, I went for comfort over boot space. (I drive an S-type, not a mk5 gti wink )

Oh dear,we have an XF "sportbrake" diesel the 200ps variety......I use it as a work tool and it's ok. Does that mean I have to throw in my ph card on the way out?

Or does the E63 V8 bi-turbo 550bhp dog car that we use for weekends or the Ducati Panagale S in the garage used as a toy mean I can stay. OP you sound like a top cock and ph has its fair share.

Don't assume anything,I was with a customer today and chatting to him about his new Alfa he has just purchased but he was more concerned about the new engine needed for his helicopter yikes as he needs it for work as he is sick and tired of driving.....

I don't see the difference between a base model XF and a 520d.

Every car range has a poverty spec, it's hardly a new thing.

£300m turnover and privately owned company, but he sometimes runs around in a Octavia pool car......could you imagine a ph expert driving past him whilst looking down on him. No wonder people think this place is run by wkers and most of the posts are by wkers laugh

People do tend to judge by their own standards...

Some posts are positively cringeworthy though.

Perhaps the OP would like to see Jaguar go the way that Saab went?

The 2.2d is a nessesary evil.
The CO2 based car tax system is a mess, but thats a whole other story.
Until the system is fixed small diesels are going to become even more common.

Buy a base model anything and someone slags you off for not being able to afford the proper one. Buy the halo model instead and someone slags you off for paying so much for a £xxx car with 'a few extras'.

They're all morons. Ignore them smile

I can't imagine fitting a diesel engine in any premium car of old. But in case you haven't noticed times have changed.

Perhaps the subject of your derision is in the same situation as you i.e. he drives a pile of crap (in your opinion) because he has other priorities.

Since all manufacturers offer a range of cars I don't really see the point of your post. Having owned two XF's I don't agree with it either.

Having in the last four years or so owned a audi a6 le mans, a bmw 5 series 525 touring and a bmw 3 series 330d and s bmw x5 40d.i have just picked up an xf 200bhp sportbrake. Why you may ask. Well the audi was a great car let down by next to useless brakes, and the harddrive sound system with memory cards was a joke.the 5 series was a great car but just boring, the 330d well its a great engine, but the ride on the run flats hsd my fillings working loss.the x5, well lots of power, but seats like rock and really just like a fast van.
In real life Britain today with its roads jamed up with lorrys and cars, pot holes all over the place.i just asked myself what is the point of go faster cars bar making money for the tax man, the dealers, insurance companies and so on.
So for what I want day today the xf will lower my motoring costs hand over hand.and I dont give a dam what other people think.they just need to ask themselves one question. If they found themselves on the side of the road in the dark, rain and miles from nowhere, would they turn time a ride in the lower 2.2 diesel xf.i dont think so.

I don't get the OP's post.

Is a BMW 550i somehow a maligned car because there is a 520d in the range?

A Mercedes E500 a lesser car because of the ubiquitous E220?

An Audi A6 4.0 < a 2.0 TDi?

XF 5.0 V8 embarrassed to be a relative of the 2.2d?

I don't think so. It's just market forces at work.

The more I think about this, the dafter it is.

I guess the equivalent Merc is the E220cdi, if that's the right terminology.

I'd say I see more of those than all other current gen E Classes together.

But the whole point is there is nothing wrong with a 2.2 XF or E220CDi or 520d, bloody good cars, all capable of 140mph, comfy/safe with the latest tech and you can spec them up as much as you want.

I ran 520d for 18 months I optioned it up with 10k worth of extras including comfort seats with nappa leather, pro audio etc. A stunning car to cruise down the road in, no it wasn't a ball of fire but drove superbly.

I ran it opposite my 911 at the time, would the OP pity me as I'd just squeezed into it?

So this thread is basically a bloke with an old Saab criticising another bloke he's never met for driving a much newer, nicer car. Because its a diesel. In white. Which cheapens a brand he seems to have nothing to do with. Brilliant.

The mrs has a 163 XF, for her driving up and down the M11 / M25 a lot of times in a week it is perfect. Comfortable, cruises well at and slightly above the legal limit and has plenty of kit. Does not feel too slow to me and I usually drive an SL 55.

The more powerful one would have been better but her company car policy means sub £30k is a must.
