Oh dear,we have an XF "sportbrake" diesel the 200ps variety......I use it as a work tool and it's ok. Does that mean I have to throw in my ph card on the way out?

Perhaps the subject of your derision is in the same situation as you i.e. he drives a pile of crap (in your opinion) because he has other priorities.
Since all manufacturers offer a range of cars I don't really see the point of your post. Having owned two XF's I don't agree with it either.
Having in the last four years or so owned a audi a6 le mans, a bmw 5 series 525 touring and a bmw 3 series 330d and s bmw x5 40d.i have just picked up an xf 200bhp sportbrake. Why you may ask. Well the audi was a great car let down by next to useless brakes, and the harddrive sound system with memory cards was a joke.the 5 series was a great car but just boring, the 330d well its a great engine, but the ride on the run flats hsd my fillings working loss.the x5, well lots of power, but seats like rock and really just like a fast van.
In real life Britain today with its roads jamed up with lorrys and cars, pot holes all over the place.i just asked myself what is the point of go faster cars bar making money for the tax man, the dealers, insurance companies and so on.
So for what I want day today the xf will lower my motoring costs hand over hand.and I dont give a dam what other people think.they just need to ask themselves one question. If they found themselves on the side of the road in the dark, rain and miles from nowhere, would they turn time a ride in the lower 2.2 diesel xf.i dont think so.

I don't think so. It's just market forces at work.
But the whole point is there is nothing wrong with a 2.2 XF or E220CDi or 520d, bloody good cars, all capable of 140mph, comfy/safe with the latest tech and you can spec them up as much as you want.
I ran 520d for 18 months I optioned it up with 10k worth of extras including comfort seats with nappa leather, pro audio etc. A stunning car to cruise down the road in, no it wasn't a ball of fire but drove superbly.
I ran it opposite my 911 at the time, would the OP pity me as I'd just squeezed into it?

The mrs has a 163 XF, for her driving up and down the M11 / M25 a lot of times in a week it is perfect. Comfortable, cruises well at and slightly above the legal limit and has plenty of kit. Does not feel too slow to me and I usually drive an SL 55.
The more powerful one would have been better but her company car policy means sub £30k is a must.
