I've been to see two big cats lately just wanted a few opinions. The first is a local XJR6 and the second was a 95 XJ6.

The XJ6 has 17 service stamps and ~£700-900 bills for every year in the last three or four years from a Jaguar specialist. Last one just being last year. It's a 3 owner car with only 77k on and aside from some clear coat peeling and a bit of a hole in one rear silencer it is pretty immaculate and original. It's sat on new tyres and the dealer will throw 6 months tax in. All the electrics work it just throws up the ABS light occasionally, possibly sensor?

The R is a 95k example with double the owners and assorted history, there are 14 stamps in the book but not a lot of it is recent it tails off in about 2005 and the rest is various receipts. It really needs four new tyres as the fronts are cracking and the rears are from late 2004. It needs taxing. Has an intermittent traction control fault and the head lining is coming unstuck, as well as the factory lacquer peel. The rear arches have some bubbling too although the sills are fine.

Both are sub £2k (but the R is a £££ hundred more than the 6, and will need tyres) and both drive very well. I'm not looking for immaculate at this price point and age and it won't be a daily driver.

Head says the XJ6 is a brilliant buy the 320 bhp slightly more exclusive one is very appealing and is in the back of my mind... idea

If you are looking to keep it long term, it would have to be the XJR. At that mileage it is well worth spending a few quid getting it sorted, they really are becoming rare now. I had the XJ6 and as much as I loved it, I was still wishing I had waited for a good XJR. A very special car indeed.

Regardless of how much you like a particular car or how much you're prepared to spend on bringing that particular car up to scratch with a 15 year old + Jaguar overall condition is absolutely everything for low cost grief free ownership. Pampered XJ6.

This is the predicament really. I'm well aware they won't be ran on a shoe string and I am prepared for that but ideally I'd like to not be dishing out straight off of the bat. The 6 needs nothing at all, I could be a bit anal and service it again but it hasn't moved more than 50 miles since the last service (all with the recommended fluids and OEM filters, even down to the correct Jaguar coolant) It's peanuts to insure and ready to waft away.

I highly doubt I'll keep for more than say 6-12 months as I like a good change now and again while I still have the luxury of an every day car. Head says waft around sensibly on a reasonable budget for a few months and heart says if you're going to get one get the super subtle warp speed one. lick

If it's not a keeper, then go for the XJ6. The XJR would be my choose as a long term car, it may not be pampered, but as long as it's been well looked after and stands up to a good inspection, it should be fine. Short term, XJ6, it's still a nice motor. Haggle hard as they are very difficult to sell.

Sounds like a no brainer to me. Buy the XJ6, waft it about for a while to get the XJ box ticked then sell it on for pretty much what you've paid if or when you get bored. If it's a good one that shouldn't be too hard. On the other hand the XJR might easily be ruinous - they are bought to be driven hard which is not good for long term durability of suspension and brakes and it already wants tyres, bodywork and a headlining.

The novelty of emptying a £80 fuel tank every 200 miles or so if you boot an XJR about will quickly wear off too...

As a huge XJR fan I would still say if you are only going to keep it for a year then the XJ6 is the best choice. With the money you save then maybe you could go for a much better XJR after that???

Bought the 6. Very happy. Have only done the 15 or so miles home but its silky smooth and very comfy. The clock works (which I heard is a rarity) Satisfied with the power available, does kick its heels up if you bury the throttle.

Need to check out the intermittent abs fault and just give it a general tidy up. Have been flicking through the masses of invoices I have. Every stamp up until 2005 is Jaguar main dealer and then its been a specialist from there on. It's wanted for nothing. Two £700+ receipts in the space of two month in 2012! (Subframe mountings, bushes galore)

Just seems so much vehicle for the price of a MacBook pro. Not going to lie would have loved the XJR but I think in my circumstance I chose correctly. Looking forward to some lengthy drives over summer. smile

Remove each wheel in turn and disconnect the ABS sensors. Check wiring for any signs of damage. Give the plugs and sockets a shot of WD40 and refit.

May be the contacts in the transponder - do some of the functions work better than others? If so you need to strip and clean and that means you'll probably loose the code. I know how to reprogrammed the X308 ones but can't remember if the X300 is the same procedure.

I've had it lock and unlock by playing about with it and swapping the batteries about but its very hit & miss. The back of the fob that holds the batteries is broken so its taped on that probably doesn't help.

Going to try find the syncing method online and see if that works.

Took it apart and cleaned everything up and it works fine now, strange. Also the ABS light hasn't come on at all today so I'm guessing it was probably due to being stood for several weeks. Also found I have the cup holder arm rest but the actual mechanism is completely broken and its missing the actual holder part, its definitely been butchered before. I've just stuck it down and I'll try find a replacement at some point.

Gave it a quick wash at work today, scrubs up well!

Nice collection Darren. biggrin I do love those XJR alloys admittedly, if I see a set for the right price I might snap some up.
