I'm looking at XKR's at the moment and those within budget fall into either the late 4 litre models or the early 4.2.

Can anyone tell me why the 4.2 would be better or worse? Did the early 4.2's have any niggles I should be aware of? I imagine by the end of the 4 litre line most problems should have been ironed out.

Thanks in advance.

4.2 is quite a lot better and has all the weak points of the 4.0 sorted. Better and somewhat more reliable 6 speed autobox is also a big improvement.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a major advantage of the 4.2 is the latest style steel timing tensioners, which is a weak point on the 4 litre engines.

You're right. The 4.0 engine can be retro fitted with the 3rd gen metal bodied tensioners. A couple of hours work and parts at around £75. Fairly easy to DIY.

Cheers and a good article there Jodypress.

I think I'm edging to the 4.2.
