It is more than what i was looking for. It feels bloody quick! Drives spot on, going to book it in next week for a gearbox oil/filter change for piece of mind. Ive got a feeling this is a keeper. Will do a readers car thread when it stops raining and i can take some piccys.

When I bought my S-Type 4.2 V8 SE with only 14 miles on the clock I decided I would keep it for a long while, and had over 10 years of great motoring with it. Somewhat sad to see it depart recently after 128,000 miles. It was still going very well but has a few expensive items coming up.

I admit to wondering what the STR would be like, although 300 bhp seemed sufficient. Now I have an XF 5.0 V8 with 380 bhp I feel this is ample power!

wink The pipe that goes down the valley and connects to the back of the throttle body. Much easier to check and change than on an R , but no fun when it splits and empties all the fluid out 150 miles from home !

Well, there you are, I learn something every day! I didn't realise there was the same valley pipe on the non R 4.2 but seems there is, and as no supercharger it suspect it's a quick thing to renew.

Does the 5.0 V8 non supercharged engine also have a valley pipe (for future reference!)?

What were these expensive items that were coming up? See if i can do anything to catch before they happen. Definately getting the gearbox oil changed as soon as possible.. The thought of that going bang and bankrupting me is not worth thinking about haha!

At the time of the last service and MoT, both December 2013, I had an advisory that the rear suspension and other bits of suspension such as gaiters were showing signs of wear. There was no problem with the Mot at that time. The JMD called me in June to offer me a free while-I-waited check which I did. They reported that there had been further wear and that the car would pass the MoT if done that day but they were concerned it would not do so in December 2014 when the next MoT is actually due. I got an estimate for the total job to fix everything...gulp! It was this plus I knew that the engine was occasionally mis firing on start up which the JMD could not find the reason for, that made me decide to consider whether to keep the S-Type or not.

There's some follow up. Having part exchanged the S-Type I spotted it on Auto Trader for sale with a dealer (not the JMD I part exchanged it with) and for a special reason I won't go in to I decided to call the dealer. It emerged that he had the car go through an MoT in the past few days and it sailed through. This means either that the JMD were trying things on, or that the dealer selling the car was pulling a fast one with a questionable MoT. Whatever, whoever bought the car probably feels he/she's got a year's trouble free motoring from an MoT perspective. The new owner may have an surprise or two round the corner....
