It depends what you are looking for. The XJR is fantastic and very fast, but it is also slightly less cossesting and certainly more thirsty. The 4.2na is no slouch, it will show a clean pair of heals to all but the most committed, you can waft when you want to and get a move on when needs must.
I have really enjoyed my 4.2, far more in fact than I ever imagined I would. Its been solid, dependable and a delight.

My brother has been running a 3.5 V8 Sport Premium for the past year, after several years with a Vauxhall Omega V6 (he'd have had another Omega had they made them for longer).

Contrary to comments from previous posters, the 3.5 certainly does have a purpose; the thing goes like the clappers (though it does get a diet of Super Unleaded - perhaps others don't bother). It steps off the mark more impressively than any automatic I've driven, and the brakes are fantastic.

He also owns a Monaro, as I have done previously, so we are used to performance and the 3.5 XJ does not disappoint. My father has a 3.0 V6 X-Type, and we do not feel that the characteristics of the V6 would suit the XJ; the V8 is much more torquey. The nearby Jaguar specialist stated that there is a noticeable difference between the 3.0 and 3.5, less so between the 3.5 and 4.2 NA.

On his typical fast A-road commute the fuel consumption is about 23-25mpg, while on longer runs it can return over 30mpg.
Seconded - I bought a 3.5 V8 back in April and have just got back from two weeks of holidaying up in Yorkshire and down in Normandy. Car didn't miss a beat and uses no oil. MPG averages about 23-24mpg and I'm not shy with the throttle. It is an excellent mile-muncher, but also does A and B roads quite nicely too.

And I don't get the earlier comment about the 3.5 not being as reliable - I don't think any of the engines are problematic from the reading I did before buying.

I'd also suggest having a look at the 2.7 diesel - I know it seems wrong to put a diesel in a Jag, but it doesn't lack torque and returns excellent mpg apparently.

4.2 N/A it probably is, then... and, as stated above, I won't have a diesel. Not just because I don't like how they drive, but because of what goes out the exhaust.
