They also did an early "S" with the supercharged v8. My mother in law drives one
The SV8? It was the top-of-the-range launch model.http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...
OP buy one of these, sod use the under-budgetness to say sod it to the road tax and relatively small amount of extra fuel for a period

And there's the 5.0 V8 non supercharged XF also a launch model, with 384 BHP, but never actually promoted/advertised by Jaguar UK. I have one of these and it's superb rendition of what's traditionally expected from a Jaguar.

Not a launch model - the 5.0 Gen III engine was released a year or so in to production R.

That's the one I want if I'm XF shopping, but they aren't common! Same thing with the 5.0 NASP XJ. There was also a non supercharged 4.2 in the launch lineup and that's probably the one to have if you can't afford one of the later cars. The 3.0 V6 petrol was way off the pace by then and the 2.7d is rather slow and can be problematic. The 4.2 was well proven and a thoroughly enjoyable engine, either supercharged or NASP.R.
If I was getting into XF ownership for the long haul (10+ years say) I'd probably choose the 4.2 over the 5.0 despite the far better drive ability of the latter, simply to avoid the coking and other potential complications of the direct injection system. From my S-Type experience I'd say that the diesels are far too complicated and fragile to be an economically viable long term/high mileage ownership prospect.

The SV8 is a stunningly well kept secret. Very complete car. Comfortable. Top of the range so most examples are absolutely loaded with tech and toys. In gear punch from the supercharged V8 is breath-taking. Well worth a look if in the OPs budget. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

Don't all XFs have split/fold rear seats? That's important.
The split function is in all the cars but definitely some models later on didn't come with the handles in the boot to release them. An easy thing to retrofit.Gassing Station | Jaguar | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
