Was driving behind one of these for a while today and think i'm in love.
Always have had a soft spot for Jags and V8's and these type R models all of a sudden seem like a great idea!
How are they off the line ? I've got a twin turbo V6 mitsu (4x4 drive) and a little light 182 sport who are both of the line quite quickly.
I've never been a fan of auto boxes so just wondering how these feel of the line, is there a bit of lag before the power kicks in, or is it foot down and you're away ?
I don't have an R, but am familiar with most of Jag's V8s. I do have an S-Type with the same ZF gearbox as the R.
I find it very tractable. You can read the 0-60 figures yourself off the internet, but in reality my 3.0 S-Type is lacking in grunt but in today's environment I can still "take the initiative" away from traffic lights if I need a lane change thanks to good traction, good throttle response and a fast gearbox.
Ok I have the ZF8 gearbox at home too and that makes the ZF6 look slow, but objectively speaking, you'll rarely see a complaint about the ZF6 which was a world beater at the time and is still a very useable and respectable gearbox.
Providing you use good quality tyres (and you'd be a fool not to on a 400bhp car) and are not a hamfisted buffoon who mashes his right foot into the carpet breaking traction rather than applying power smartly but smoothly to benefit from the weight shift to the driving wheels, you'll find the STR quite quick off the line.

I Have an XJR, same engine/box etc as the S type R and once you get it moving it takes off at warp speed. No lag or delay, the biggest issue is getting the power down when pulling away so you need to get it rolling before booting it.
When i normal driving mode the auto pulls away in 2nd gear, but stick it in sport and you get 1st gear but that does require feathering the throttle a bit or you just wheelspin.

The 3.0 rarely troubled its P-Zero Assymetricos and the Michelin Pilot Super Sports it's on now are utterly brilliant.
The XFR-S is pretty much an S-Type R underneath but with an active diff and ever so slightly wider tyres (the latest P-Zeros), albeit offset somewhat by a hefty power hike. It can easily spin its wheels through 2nd gear in the dry if throttle is applied aggressively, but as I said above, and I've found it applicable to RWD in general, if you apply power smoothly and allow the rear tyres to load up, you can get a surprising amount of torque through them.
There's a very satisfying knack to it - a dimension of driving satisfaction that AWD deprives you of and FWD just can't do.

I have an S-Type R and also an XFR-S.
I was going to part-x the S-Type but for the money I was offered I decided to keep it.
Both fabulous cars but on balance the S-Type makes me smile more. It's also more roomy and comfier to drive.
I've had the S-Type since 2008 and it's been virtually trouble free so far. Love it!

I hate auto box's also. But the R is worth the compomise. Its anoying when you move the throttle and it changes gear mid corner, but you can select a gear in the J-Gate and it will keep in that gear if you are really pressing on.
The launch is trickie, it has an open diff and torque from idle. To much pedal and it spins up, not enough and the gearbox trickles away in 2nd. Pressing sport mode will ensure a 1st gear get away.

remember the top of 2nd gear is about 70mph.

I quite like that. So do they just remove one bit from somewhere in the middle or something, and replace it with a straight pipe, or did you guy a new exhaust ?Perhaps not to everyones tastes but certainly put a smile on my face

I'd like to do similar to mine but need to be able to explain to a exhaust company what it is i want done exactly.

Really simple - they simply removed the rear silences (one per side) and replaced with straight piping - there is some resonance at about 1700 rpm (which I was warned about in advance) that could be cured by fitting two very small silencers but I'd lose some of the noise - its a trade off I'm happy with but may not suit othersI'd like to do similar to mine but need to be able to explain to a exhaust company what it is i want done exactly.
I found the biggest letdown with the car was its relative silence - now its not -)

Did you have different tail pipes fitted and kept the original ones ? I'm not sure if i like the standard ones.
And does having the silencers removed effect the emissions/mot ?

If you go to Longlife ask them to phone their Oswestry branch and they'll give them all the info they need.
I went deliberately for very subtle tailpipes with an outturned lip but was offered a good range - just rather let the noise do the talking rather than the width of the pipes

Went to local exhaust shop today and had them removed, and some different tips added, what a difference!! It sounds awesome! I drove the 20 odd mile home with all 4 windows open (and the heater on full blast) just to listen to it burble and roar. Thanks for that tip!
