Hi

Might sound a dumb question.

Had a couple of handbrake failures this week which have both been easily reset by disconnecting the module for a couple of min, and reading various posts, everything points to a potential battery failure.

The car is 7 years old, original battery, so its done well.

Is it as easy as buying a new one, and swapping it out, or does it need a bit more knowledge to reset various electronic bits and pieces?

Any help appreciated.

How much of this applies to the diesel I'm not sure but there are things to reset which aren't obvious - such as window auto up/down:

"Cycle both door drop glasses up and down to establish the upper and lower datum points.
1. Lower the glass to the stop and hold the switch in the DOWN position for a further five seconds.
2. Raise the glass fully and hold the switch in the UP position for a further five seconds."

The petrol cars need to re-learn idle settings. If this from JTIS:
"4. Start the engine and allow to idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
6. Start the engine and allow to idle for approximately two minutes (this will allow the ECM to learn the idle values).
7. Apply and hold the brake pedal, select drive and allow the engine to idle for a further two minutes.
8. Drive the vehicle for approximately five miles/eight kilometers of varied driving to enable the ECM to complete its learning strategy."

Then of course the usual electronics, as per JTIS:
"9. Reset the audio unit, clock and climate control assembly to original settings to avoid customer complaint."

Timely question, I'm having the battery in my STR changed tomorrow at my local Hi-Q. They did my previous S and piggybacked the battery during the swap so no resets required, they're planning to do the same this time.

The Jag is not unique I gather, doing swaps this way is becoming quite common.

Dumb of me, but I never though of that.

Also we have a Hi-Q in Swindon, I will check them out on price, never thought of using them.

Thanks

Just a tip. The battery is secured by a bit long threaded rod that screws in to the boot floor. The threaded joint between rod and floor is prone to rusting, and the threaded rods are very easy to shear off when you try to unscrew them.

I recommend giving the threaded joint a damn good soak in your favourite penetrating oil a few times before trying to unscrew it - just to make sure it comes out intact otherwise you can't secure the new battery.

I think that I could get a decent one on-line for c£85 delivered, I'm expecting Hi-Q to add maybe £20 to that. It's certainly a home job if you've time....I haven't!smile

All in £115. They managed to drop the connection when swapping but all I had to do was re-enter the audio code and set the park brake, nothing else.
