Has anyone fitted the Guy Broad box to their E type and if so how is it ?

First gear looks a bit low and the box appears to be rigidly mounted at the rear which doesn't seem right to me.

Aside from anything else they're the only company that have a box available.

Anyone fitted a Supra box ?

Not in an E-Type, but I've got the Guy Broad box in my XK150 but I test drove the box in a series II E-Type.
Internally it's a Ford MT75 from the Sierra Cosworth RS500. Yes first is a bit low, but then that's usually true of 1st gears especially when mated to an XK engine, even a close ratio Moss box. If you wanted to, you can change the ratios. Because of the heritage of the box there are people who make other gears to go in it, I was told Quaife make a range of optional gear ratios. The gearbox is really easy to use (it's a modern box) and feels very precise. Guy Broad then have these internals put into a casing that is bolt compatible with the Moss box, so it is bolting in in exactly the same way as the original gearbox. I understand that the gear linkages are different and that Chris and Winspeed had to fiddle around a bit to get things to work nicely in an E-Type, who's gear lever isn't in quite the same place as on an XK, the box was originally designed to work with XKs.
One difference is that this gearbox is considerably lighter than the original Jaguar/Moss box, which can mean suspensions need adjusting.

Ask Adrian at Realm about the Supra box, he has sold plenty and plenty of conversion kits. I will be fitting one in the build of my LWE replica

It's a series 1 4.2.

From what I've gathered so far the Supra box needs a fair bit of fettling to the car - alteration to the transmission tunnel cover and the rear "chassis" and the gear lever position is not exactly the same.

The Guy Broad box is easier to fit but has a very low first gear.

As far as I can gather these are the only boxes currently available ex stock.

Not my understanding at all and the gear lever has options due to the nature of the gearbox tower. It can be adapted for a number of classics and retain the original position.

Which bit isn't your understanding ?

It was the box supplier that told me the gear lever was 3/4 inch further forward and that the tunnel cover needed modification.

A company that's previously fitted the box told me that due to the increased length over the original some fettling under the car is required as well as to the tunnel.

If you know someone that's fitted one it would be a great help as the box itself is great and it's also the cheapest available.

I spoke again with Adrian from Realm Engineering, who manufactures and sells the supra conversion kit. He says the gear lever is modified to fit the existing gearbox tunnel hole. However due to the size of the supra box compared to the standard manual, tunnel modifications are required. Over the coming months I will be fitting one.

Thanks for that E600,I'll give him another call.

He was a bit vague about the work required under the car which was the thing that put me off a little.

I'm keen to avoid too much metalwork as the car is finished and on the road.

The five-speed market has been a bit of a minefield over the years. Several "specialists" produced their own mods to adapt the T5 gearbox and these weren't always successful.

I bought two gearboxes from a company in the USA a few years ago. They're really excellent, fit straight in and have good ratios (the Supra box first gear is a bit low IMHO) Unfortunately the USA manufacturer now refuses point blank to supply to the UK due to disputes with his UK agent who copied (badly) his design.

E type Fabs also make a box that drops straight in but it's a bit expensive and they can be difficult to contact.

Elite transmissions have a good reputation and use all new parts in their box. They were my fist choice but don't have anything available until February at the earliest.

I made up a calculator that allows comparison of gear ratios/diff ratios/wheel-tyre size/revs and speed. It's very useful, particularly when changing components on the car.

If anyone wants a copy please pm me.

I would agree looking at the box ratios that 1st will be low, especially with a 3.54 back end, however in 5th it should provide an effective ratio of 2.9 overall. which will allow for brisk acceleration on the intermediate gears but comfortable cruising.

I will provide an update as progress allows.
