Hi All,

New to this part of the forum, but I've just sold my E39 M5 that to be honest I never really got along with, and am about to sell my 540i Auto. It strikes me that an STR will combine both things from these cars that I like, easy wafty auto nature but with 400 bhp on tap. Never driven the R, but I've had a go in a diesel and a 3.0 V6 and was impressed with both. I've been sniffing around the classifieds, on here, AutoTrader and eBay and am yet to visit a car, poor history and iffy owners have been the trouble so far. I've just joined the Jaguar Forum and posted an advert there, not sure where else to look.

If anyone has any advice on buying and things to look for that aren't well covered on the web that would be great, or indeed anyone thinking of selling please let me know.

Thanks

Tom

I did see that one on Autotrader too. Seems strong, especially for me since I don't like the colour combo or the lack of nav.

It's an R I want, not a NA 4.2.

One thing put me off the Type R was the two tone interiors that looked awful.

I really like them! Especially the ones with the red inserts, it's so un-Jaguar.

They are a great car and quite rare.

I've been thinking of selling mine since November, but I just can't bring myself to let her go.

Well if you did, it would go to a very good home and you could keep tabs on it in the Reader's Ride section here. That is of course if you sold it to the right person biggrin

Less than 1200 sold in UK and I think less than 900 left so quite rare and tipped to start rising in value

I love mine, probably the best car I have ever owned

I called ours the worlds fastest armchair. I loved it, a 2005 on a 55 plate. It had a full cat back stainless steel AMD exhaust on it (I've still got it in fact).

The problems I had were the wheels buckled due to bad pot holes on my drive to work, and the factory alarm went funny, it ended up costing £600 plus to fix. Apparently the brains are kept in or around the front bumper and they suffer from water damage.

Now now Tim, your M5 was lovely but the S Type R is every bit as good, may be not as hardcore but a slightly different mix of qualities

Great car, I've a 2004 STR and adore it. Every car goes wrong at some point and these are no exception, just keep something back in the kitty when you find one. They didn't all have two tone leather, mine is Ivory (I think!).

Any excuse for a pic!

Well, one's a five litre manual V8 and the other is a supercharged 4.2l V8 for a start.

For what it's worth, I owned the M5 for four years and I've had an STR for about two.

I prefer the Jag. Make of that what you will. Some people prefer the E55 Merc, which is the third car in the trio most commonly tested together.

Amazing car. Comfy and Fast.

My S-Type R was my first ever Jaguar. I bought it one year old in 2008.

I've had many cars since (mainly Jaguars) but I still own the S-Type. It's just too good to sell.

It's pretty close to being my favourite ever car.

Buy one!! Enjoy! :-)

10 years ago I had an S type D and I have an XKR I loved both of them so I guess if the Type R is a combo of both it must be pretty amazing.
The BMW M5 and the Merc sorry I just don't get them.

I put a deposit down today on a 2003 STR in Silver with Black leather, 68k on the clock and very well looked after. It even got a new gearbox last year from Jaguar that is still under warranty, but it's got a fruity exhaust, sounds awesome! Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow!

Looking forward to compare to the M5, never really bonded with the M5, you needed to be in the right time and place to really enjoy it, whereas my 540i could be enjoyed everywhere due to the auto gearbox. The way I see it, the STR combines the best of both!
