I have been considering getting new tyres for my XJ6, and have been doing some online shopping.

Given the new EU legislation, it is easy to compare different brands and types of tyre. My question is as follows: every post I can find about XJ6 tyres say do not buy budget tyres, but where the budget tyres are better than a premium tyre, why not?

By way of example, compare the price, fuel efficiency rating, decibel level and stopping distance in the wet between the next 3 links.

http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/tyres/brand/westlake...

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/falken/ziex-...

http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/tristar/spor...

The third link seems to offer the same things for a significantly lower price, so why not?

I'm sure there is a good reason, but I can't work it out!

The original tyres for the X300 are no longer available. They were supplied with P6000 but a (J) version for Jaguars which were intended to allow you to chose a range of tyre pressures depending on your personal preferences. I couldn't ever detect a lost of handling when running them at the comfort pressure (27PSI IIRC) so I always ran them like that as the ride is better than at the normal pressure (30PSI IIRC).
Sadly the P6000 is no longer available. I fitted a couple of newer Pirellis and they are both noisier and less compliant with no discernible advantages (well apart for the fact you can actually buy the damn things).

Two of the three don't meet the Jaguar speed requirements for an XJ. I've had Falken ZE912's on an XJ - they lasted just 11k and on some surfaces started a resonance that sounded like a wheel bearing failing. I wouldn't buy them again.

Give thanks to all that is holy and omnipotent that the P6000 is no longer available.
EFA. I found them to be awful.

I went with Avon ZV5. About £100 each fitted and they are quiet, grippy and most of all predictable. I had a couple of terrifying moments in the wet when i got my jag with some older P6000s on it and changed them as soon as possible.

My X300 LWB came with Pirelli P4000s which were awful. Replaced them with Kumho Ecstas which were excellent.

I fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 2s to my X308 XJR and again they were great.
I ran my previous X300 on Kumho's and was very happy with the price/performance. I have them on my current X350.

Thanks, it's P7s I've got on the front at the moment and I'm less than impressed.
I'll try swapping them to the back and see whether they are less of an issue there. I suspect they'll be grippier than the P6000 so probably best at the back anyway.

Sorry for a late thread resurrection: thank you everyone for your input!

3 votes for Kumho: can anyone give me a link to a website selling them at a reasonable price? I looked on Oponeo and can't tell the difference between the £56 and the £69 ones, o any of the ones in between!

Many thanks in advance

I buy mine here....

http://www.mktyres.co.uk

But they are only 5 miles away, and Kuhmo mail dealers, I'm sure it's of no use to you, but the main dealer thing is worth looking in to, as my recent Kuhmos (3 on my Jag, 2 on my Wife's Citroen come with a lifetime damage/puncture guarantee !....and it works.

I had an MOT advisory in March 15 on my Jag X350 with a screw in the tyre. Took it back to the dealer (Tyre originally bought in June 14), they said the tyre wasn't repairable, checked the depth (it was 5mm) and credited me £60 towards the cost of a new tyre (which was £110).

Quite happy with that, but a mate who had Kuhmo's fitted from a local to him Citroen independent wasn't able to offer the gurantee.

Suggest you check via their website;

http://kumhotyre.co.uk/dealer-locator/

The guarantee isn't mentioned, but the last tyre I bought with it was only 2 weeks ago....so ask.

As much as I like the sound of a main dealer etc. the cost is just too much for me to justify.

I am thinking of plumping forthese Kumhos, can someone please advise as to whether I have done the right thing? Seems right to me: http://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-details/kumho-kh31-22...

The KH 31 has been around for a long time, and I'm not sure - better check yourself - that the load rating of the ones you've chosen is right for an XJ either.

You'll need to add fitting charges to that price. Personally I'd avoid buying tyres mail order and getting a third party to fit them as you'll enter a whole world of pain if you're not happy. Returning unsatisfactory mail order tyres is practically impossible as I've found out to my cost. I'd get online quotes and then see if a local tyre co can get close to the price. That might may well work out a bit more expensive but you'll have the opportunity to check the manufacturing dates on the actual tyres to be fitted before any money changes hands and most importantly there's only one person or firm carrying total responsibility for whats been supplied and fitted so theres no opportunity for playing the blame game if anything is wrong.

Sound advice as ever JagSteve, I'll report back when I have new tyres smile

So... I bought my tyres.

Kumho KU31 XL tyres, and they work so, so well. The ride is unbelievable, handles like a dream... I can't quite believe the difference the new tyres have made.

Thanks for update OP.

Not got round to sorting mine yet but NSR slow puncture & your feedback has confirmed my thoughts. Thank you.

Just out of interest, which model do you have? Mine is a 95 Sovereign 3.2 (56k miles!)

97 Sport 3.2 manual, with 139k. Going in for a service today (at vast expense!), hopefully will get even better once everything is done
