With a bit of cash sitting around for the XFR, i'm now looking at changing the pipes to something that growls.
The stock pipes are ok, but for something with so much presence, i would like the car to sounds fantastic.
My only problems is that i'm judging the potential new pipes from YouTube clips, which are compressed (even in 1080p).
Say something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZbW5_5E3xg

So i hand it over to you guys, which pipes should i be looking at?

Ultimately i'm after something that is loud, so I'm guessing a 1 and 2 stage upgrade?
It needs to sound like a muscle car, well given i have a massive V8 up front, it would be rude to restrict it.
Brutal in the lower rev range (like an AMG C63), which pops and cackles when coming off the high revs.

I've heard that Spires are something that i should look out for, but then this is as much as i know.

Thanks

I can vouch for the Spires stage 2 rear system, we've had a set on our XF V8 since we got it.

It transforms the sound to proper, old school muscle car. Deep and bassy, especially on cold start. It rattles the windows when my wife takes it to work, yet is perfectly civilised when cruising on the motorway.

£800 well spent imho thumbup

If you want more even more volume, add the stage 1 system hehe

oooh, in that case that's a good place to start. I guess i can always add the other part later (stage1).
Thanks for the link to the clip, i think i will need to have a chat with the guys to see what they can do for me.

Just received an email from Matt, at Spires, and he confirms that i need a Stage2 upgrade. Apparently a Stage3 is quieter, even though it breaths easier due to the X-pipe installation, how odd.
Fingers crossed he can fit it on a weekend.

You'll enjoy them if you get them fitted. BTW, they're just bolt on, so an option is to get them delivered and fit them yourself.

As much as i would love to do this, i don't have the ability to raise the car off the ground. For the sake of a couple of quid, it's probably best to let the pro do it.
Plus i can then drive back to SW and enjoy the new sound smile

I've only got an AMV8 to reference but how does the stock and upgraded exhausts compare to the AMV8 stock exhaust?

AMV8 (i think this is stock)- https://youtu.be/1FLBl5Akk3g?t=24s
XFR Spires - https://youtu.be/Ki2518vMHRE?t=1m35s
XFR Stock - https://youtu.be/e4T4mgeqBlY?t=8s

Although bear in mind that these clips are compressed, and so they do not allow you to fully appreciate the sound.

The AMV8 does appear to be stock.

From the videos the stock AMV8 sounds a lot better than the stock XFR. The Spires XFR and stock AMV8 are on a par. Thanks!

I'm so happy right now.
A Stage 2 exhaust upgrade was put in place today, by Matt at Spires.
First off, what a great guy, that was happy to talk to you whilst carrying out the work and very knowledgeable about anything related to cars; a proper engineer!
I was there a bit earlier than the 1PM slot he booked for me, but Matt was happy to crack on with the work, the whole job was completed in about 35mins.

I'm truly amazed by the difference in sound, that was made by the stock exhaust, compared to these new ones.
It's as if someone has opened a door to allow a beast in the engine to make some noise.

On the way back down the M40, i was shifting up and down the gears to hear the sound. Anything over 50/60MPH and you have to close the windows, far too much wind noise. But it does sound great inside and there is little drone. But up to 40MPH, the windows were down and i was just listening to the V8 bliss. Oh and that mixed in with the SuperCharger whine... cloud9
I'm getting up early tomorrow morning to go for a small tunnel run.

I did!!
After Matt had installed it, he jumped in and started it up, pulled out of the garage and shot down the length of the unit. Mind blowing!
Of course i recorded it on the phone, but the video doesn't capture the whole experience.
Things like the vibration, the sound of rushing air, the echo, all of this is lost on the video.

I don't think my neighbours like me any more.
Also I've gone from the auto box, to the flappy paddles - Sport - Dynamic mode, style of driving.

All i have to do now, is find a good tunnel run route.

God, I miss that noise.

Now running an RS6 with a Milltek; It doesn't sound half as good - but is much, much quicker smile

Is it bad that I've used just over a 1/4 of a tank doing 20 miles?
Blipping the throttle, flooring it and using the paddles is so addictive.
I can't let it drive in a normal auto box smile
