Hi all, I am looking for some help from the knowledge base that is pistonhead members.

I recently bought a series 3 XJ12 which is lovely in all ways except for some very stiff/lumpy steering. With the aid of an older brother I managed to remove the lower steering column to find the UJ at the pinion end totally ceased up. With lots of brute force, WD40 and soaking in oil it is still too stiff to consider putting back on so I need to get a replacement. The one I took off, however, does not look like the item in the Haynes manual. After some internet searching it looks to me like it might be one from an XJ40. Since a series 3 part (HHB9500AA) costs about £450 and an XJ40 one (HMB9500AA) costs about £90 I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the part below is indeed from an XJ40 and therefore if I can use an XJ40 one instead of the series 3 part.

Looks similar to the one I've just removed from a XJS

Cheers 289, that does look exactly the same.

I looked up the part number for the xj40 and it looks slightly different in the mid section.

I found another xj40 part number but the picture doesn't show the mid section

So not yet found which part I have. But the important thing is just getting a suitable one to use now.

Hi Jith, I hope you arm is ok, I really appreciate the offer of help, especially as you have been having an op on your arm, but I have actually now managed to source a part.

Just in case anyone else ever needs the part numbers. It seems that HHB9500AA was the final part number that superseded some older part numbers (such as BEC16333) and that these are the same across the series 3 XJ12 and simlar age XJS. The XJ40 part number HMB9500AA is definitely different, whether it would fit or not I do not know.
