Am also considering an XKR as well as an XJR/STR, have seen these two that are in budget that both look very clean and tidy,

Same seller as well,

Any thoughts, would prefer a convertible but might go for a coupe if the right one comes up.

Here is what I have learnt, ring true, anything to add ?

The possible problems, as I see it are Nikasil, but probably not a realistic concern these days, even so do the oil cap test to see whether its got any blow by, Cam chain tensioners, I would guess that most have the upgraded part by now, if not, get it doen, is it just a rattle from cold to see if its a problem ? otherwise these engines are pretty solid arent they ?

Gearbox, check it goes in all the gears and isnt doing anything weird, look for evidence of a gearbox oil change or budget for one.

Suspension, listen for clonks and any undue floatiness, concern being bushes, not sure which XKs have CATS which I know can be a problem, if not a huge one these days.

Electrics, generally, check everything works, any weirdness is usually down to a dying battery I believe.

Rust, floorpans go, check as per any other car, these two look like they have had a cosseted life so wouldnt expect any problems, any other rust spots on them ?

Otherwise, just cosmetic and interior condition, those two look, frome he pictures, pretty much as new, do they seem priced appropriately to you ? XKRs seem to command high prices even after all this time, some still up at 25k, surely that is pie in the sky.

I bought a 2001 XKR convertible earlier in the year.

Those 2 look reasonable. The coupe looks a little overpriced possibly, and the convertible is a strange colour with boring wheels but not massively overpriced for a dealer.

Otherwise everything else you've said is about right, If those two have been well looked after they could be worth the money. smile

These are lovely cars if you get a nice one, but I would add the following:-

1. I prefer the coupe both because it has the edge in handling and there is more headroom

2. That coupe has got the wrong XKR badge on the rear, it's from the later 4.2, I would want to know why

3. You won't know if its a good one until you have a. sat in it b. driven it and c. had it up on a ramp and inspected its privates.

4. They are all prone to corrosion, and fixing it can be expensive. The 4.0's are more
prone to floor pan rust than the 4.2's because of a crazy flange detail which promotes it. A lot of them have holes in the floorpans

5. Check all the suspension components, sill flanges, wheelarches, etc etc, and remove your rose tinted glasses while you are doing it.

6. Really, the 4.2's are the better cars if you can stretch to it.

7. Get it out on a motorway and check the braking from high speed.

8. It should corner well under power, be tight and not loose and clunky, and the steering should be stable in the centre if you take your hands off.

9. The veneers should all match and be level with even gaps

10. Everything should be present, two sets of keys plus a valet key, service book, manual, radio code.

11. Does the service manual confirm that the car has indeed been looked after - that is the acid test. It's an easy thing to say. The service book should tell the truth.

12. On the convertible, you have to make sure that the hood works smoothly and quickly and does not stick, jam or take forever. If it is not regularly used the hydraulic fluid congeals and it won't work properly. Fixing that is a laborious and dirty business involving stripping the whole thing down and cleaning it.

If you do get a nice one you will love it.

Tensioners need replacing if not done already. Even if you can't hear them, get them replaced if there is no proof. Or take the rocker covers off and have a look
