Mrs cranked up would like to change her car and buy a used XF. The 2008 model with the 2-7 engine seems top of list.
Doing my homework on the car is not filling me with much confidence that it will be a bit of a money pit regards repair and service.
Niggles with various electrical gremlins seem common as do some engine problems due to 'inappropriate' useage.
Alternatives seem to be BMW 5 or Merc of the same age band.

Having said that the Jaguar has many special attributes making it attractive on the forecourt.
Advise and comments appreciated.

Better to go for 3 litre diesel from 2009 on. All the early niggles were sorted by then.

If 'inappropriate useage' is an issue for your missus, there are petrol versions available.

The 3.0 V6 and 4.2 V8 are both robust and reliable, with not much difference between them economy wise

We will have a read up on these, tbh it's my fixation on the oil burners that I have over looked petrol, so good call.

Came across the 'jag info' forum, great site but sadly confirmed my early fears regarding reliability and other issues. Shame as Mrs cranked up loves look of the car.

I bought a 2008 xf 2.7 about 4 years ago which had 100k on the clock. I've not experienced any major problems with it. A couple of niggles with a sensor on the parking brake but on the whole it's been a pleasure.

Yes the diesel will not be great if you are doing mostly short journeys because the dpf needs a decent long drive to regenerate; but that's not a Jag issue that is a generic problem with any dpf equipped car, regardless of manufacturer.

Thanks for input Colin, read so much negative stuff on other forums we don't want Mrs cranked up living in a repair shop. Reading some positive feedback gives hope. It is such a fabulous looking car with the iconic badge, it's a tough call, Jaguar or join the sheep!

And what type of mileage will this car be doing?

This. It comes down to the type of usage it will get. There are thousands of 2.7s going around without problems, but they tend not to be the ones used for going to the shops.

If it will be doing starship milage, the 2.7 will be fine. If it's not, then the 4.2 petrol (or supercharged SV8) is the nicer/smoother/bit quicker car to have anyway.

That's a shame, mine's going for a bit more than that.

Very few sportsbrake models around, certainly none within our budget and would'nt expect to find one. However, we should be able to find a good 2009/10 model with a bit of serious haggling.
Looks good advise to go for the 3ltr D and that is what we will go for.

I have owned my 2008 2.7D XF for just over a year now and covered over 20k.

Jaguar have always been my favourite brand of cars so have been disappointed with the problems i've had with mine.

I bought the car with 40k from a Jag dealership and so far have had problems with the following-

Electrical gremlins, car goes into limp home mode. Turns out a replacement battery was needed. Most of the time you just need to pull over, stop the engine and start again. Problem goes away for a week or two...

Most recently, the common problem of the flexi pipe before the cat has failed. After doing some research online, there is a fix from Spires for about £600. Jaguar recommend that the cat is changed at the same time - why?? - so I was quoted £1384.45 for changing one side, and £2507.04 for the both.

After a bit of talking with the dealership they will repair both flexis for £1150, a bit more expensive than others but keeps everything in house with Jaguar.

I love the car, but don't love the problems it's had! Ideally I will go for the 3.0D next as the extra power highlights just how under powered the 2.7 is.

I purchased my XF 5.0 V8 in June 2014 from a JMD. At that time it was exactly 5 years and 3 days old and had done 31,500 miles. Now it's reached 49,850 miles. I drive it around town and frequent long journeys from Surrey to Falmouth, Cambridge, France and the like.

So far it's been fully serviced once and the only thing I've had done specifically has been to replace the windscreen wipers. I hope this level of reliability continues...maybe the fact that this car was originally supplied to a Jaguar executive may have helped with this!

The other half has had her 5.0 since March 2013 when it was 2 years old and at 12k miles. It's now just past 38k and has had very little in the way of problems.

A recall for the fuel sender (actually it's the crimps on the wires on the sender), and a noisy water pump was changed last year (£279 supplied and fitted including drive belt). And that's it.

It's a lovely piece of kit and I'm hoping to persuade her to 'sell' it to me next year wink

I doubt that helped having worked @ Jag and seen how many are treated.
