Apologies for the misunderstanding. I meant that I bought two new and therefore paid the VAT, and one was bought second hand, so someone else paid the VAT when new. All three are eligible for road tax.

Pah! argue
There is no VAT on cars, I know the revenue call it VAT but it aint. The whole point of VAT is that you only pay it on the Value Added bit, hence the name. If I buy a solid gold desk encrusted in diamonds for my business then I can claim back all the VAT whereas if I buy a car so I can go out and do business then I can't claim it back... therefore it aint VAT no matter what the VAT man says. irked
