X350 XJ purchase - early cars vs late

On my motorway commute i get around 28mpg can get 30 if i get a clear road.
A and B roads and general driving around its down to 26 ish , around town sub 20 is normal.
Anything involving using all 400 horses for extended periods will see you sub 10 but youve really got to thrash it non stop for some distance to get that.
Ive heard the fuel economy on the 3.5 V8 and the V6 are same as or worse than the NA 4.2 V8

I think we must have different driving styles from a daily duties car
Really surprised to read what you said about your 4.2, You sure must like your power delivery
On the topic of mpg when doing my research I'd read that there's not that much difference between the variant petrol engines XJR excluded.
However I do keep track of my mpg using fuelly because I like to keep track of my monthly expenditure and costs of fuel is one of them.
From my tracking on the V6 the OBC is over reading by 2,Average at the moment according to fuelly is 25 but it's been dropping over the last few months (Heated seats,cold weather bla di bla) and on this tank OBC says 23.8 so more than likely when I fill up next could be as low as 22.
Just to make it clear before I get slated that this does NOT bother me
L_C if you do like a lot of power then like Dodsy you may find a V6 under powered,I think for me personally being my 1st Jag and knowing how the car would be driven I was just pleasantly surprised that's it better than I expected. I've not even used the Sport button yet

. Most of my driving is on motorways so keep the speed legal and 30mpg is easily achievable, best i ever got was 35mpg from the OBC and having measure a few fill to fills and checked I find the OBC pretty accurate on the XJR . It was not so good on my old 4.2 though for some reason.I just found the 4.2 a bit lack luster and the suspension was too soft for my liking. That said it was a fabulous motor although the shagpile carpets did mean I got laughed at by my mates. And I never could get on with all that wood, the XJR has aluminium and black leather which I personally love.
I dont use the power often but its very useful for overtakes and those point and squirt moments when you are changing lanes on the motorway.
I think economy is helped by having a powerful motor and not having to push it at all when cruising .
I usually change cars every 3 years but this XJR is so good Ive had it 4 years now and plan on keeping it for now as its only got 108k on the clock even though its 9 years old.
like you I wasn't that keen on all that wood so went for one with what they call "Olive" I think.Fully understand what you're saying and by the look of things we use these Jags for different types of journeys which explains our differences.

Not sure what the colour is called, its a silver/grey with 20 inch wheels and being an XJR the side chrome and chrome on the rear lights is replaced by gloss black. I dont have a decent pic this is the only one !

Gorgeous. Why Jaguar chose to abandon the classic shape I'll never know. They said sales suffered in an image conscious market, but I don't see many of the new XJs either. Quite often when something new comes out it takes a while to get used to but I still can't love the latest model.
Funny thing; when they tried to shrink the classic shape onto a Mondeo sized car with the X type it just didn't work (IMHO). Now vice versa, the new big'un looks awful, but the same design language on the little XE looks really nice??? Go figure.

To my mind the XE is a pointless piece of kit - does it look great? Not really. they should just have release a down specced cheap XF, like they did with the 240 & 340 back in the day.
The appeal of the XJ is very simple, as the great "Mad" Frankie Fraser once remarked, 'my favourite car is the Jaguar XJ6 - they give you confidence and you can knock other people out of your way with ease.' New one's a joke, no wonder they are not selling.
Think I may change my X308 for a X350 if I can find one that appeals to me.

It would be nice to see what the original Jaguar team of Lyons, Heynes and Hassan would produce if they were around today. Nice car from the picture you posted in '17, 07 plate, metallic grey, just before the facelift, which imho, with the heavy front and rear bodykit and the shark's fin on the roof, didn't help. I actually prefer the looks of the X308, but without a doubt the X350 is the better car. Any more pictures? What sort of spec is it, if its not impolite to ask?

Cheers, no it’s a 4.2 LWB Sov.(The exact spec I wanted as I don’t like the S/C whine ),It’s actually an 07 reg but has the company plate on it. Designated X356 apparently as one of the last before the X358 big bumper change ?This chat has popped up again to make me feel guilty that I never updated my own thread! gUILTY AS CHARGED. Can confirm purchase of said Jag after all the chat, now owned 3 years - a 2007 4.2 XJR (supertax -ouch) in Frost Blue, champagne leather, american walnut trim, now on 80-something-k miles.
I still can't believe how many cack-handed, tight-fisted b
ds have owned and skimped on this beautiful car previously, including a millionaire who kerbed the wheels so bad they all needed replacing and ran the tyres to the cords, plus a Jaguar MD service manager who owned it 2 years and didnt service it!
It was sold to me with a litany of faults (split tyres, knocking bushes, inoperative cats, leaking fuel lines) 3 days after being given a dubious MOT pass courtesy of the *supposedly* incorruptable/infallable Irish Government controlled vehicle testing system...you can imagine how far my complaints got with those people...
After a bit of restorative work (still not totally complete) it looks stunning and drives very nicely, save for a permanent engine light and low speed misfire which no garage seems to able to identify, and I wonder may be caused by an air leak, location yet to be identified.
Currently the car is in many bits fitting a new AC compressor which rather shockingly needs the engine lifting to access the bolts. I will also try a smoke test for the air leak in the same time
Ownership experience so far has been 90% love, but after a nightmare experience owning an L322 Range Rover in the same period I would say it suffers from similar JLR problems, i.e. cheaply sourced components with unexpectedly short lifespans, and no thought given to ease of long term and none-routine maintenance.
Still, I can't imagine much less than a Bentley could make me feel as good on the road.

That air leak , my money is on the rubber seal on top of the plenum which will throw an emissions fault on bank 1 and bank 2. Mine failed at around 70k and was replaced and is on the way out again now at 230k . Going to tighten it after xmas and see if i can get away without replacing it.
Take the engine cover off and you can see it , look for soot marks around it which indicates its leaking.
