Just paid deposit on XKR to find its cat D Rated
Discussion
Hi,
Just thought I would find out your views on the following:
I have been looking for a JAg XKR for about 6 weeks but could not be doing with all that shiney wood inside.
So I thought I had found the perfect car and the guy accepted my offer of £23,500, which I thought was a little high but ok considering the car had all the optional extra's (about £8 to £9ks worth when new). Also the car has a darker wood inside together with black carpet which makes much better sense and genereally looked much better.
The car can be viewed at www.chrisdeith.f2s.com.
THE ONLY THING IS I HAVE FOUND OUT VIA HPI CHECK THAT IT WAS CAT D RATED, BUT NOW BEEN FULLY REPAIRED AND INSPECTED AND APPRVD OK A YEAR AGO.
Would you buy it? or should I walk? seems a lot of money but it did fit my taste which most don't.
I would be keen to know your thoughts.
Regards,
Nick.

If it has been checked and approved no reason it is not OK, the only thing is when you come to sell and a check is done, but you are proberly looking a few years down the line.
IF is what you want, go by your own feelings.
Walk.
If a car has been in an accident there is always evidence. It may look OK ish now, but it will rust sooner, it will never be 100%, merely adequate on UK roads. Give it a sound pasting on the autobahn and it will be riddled with inadequacies that you will never be able to correct without spending a ton of cash.

nctwest, believe it or not I know Chris (not very well but enough to say hi), the car was repaired by a very good company in Crawley. From what I understand the car has never had a problem. You are of course getting a newer car from older money, that is you choice.
Like as been said before, are you going to bable to seel it when the time comes? Will the thing rust away?

Walk away it is way too much money for a 99T that is Cat D. It looks nice but you can get 99 cars without accident history for less than that price. He cannot legally keep your deposit as Cat D is an informable item and must be declared when selling a car. Speak to trading standards if you have a problem.
Good luck in your search, and consider xkec.co.uk a good place to join.
I bought my 98 XKR Convertible from e-bay for much less than you are being offered a 99 Coupe with Cat D !

Don't worry Chris won't stiff yah! But he should have told you from the out set that the car was a right off.

I was believing CAT D is light repairs, less than the value of the car which the owner chose not to have repaired. CAT C was write-off repairable, CAT B write-off spares only, CAT A/X write-off, crush only no parts salvageable.
As such a properly repaired CAT D that has now been inspected as OK should be around 10% less than a similar car with no accident history.
Any car which the owner doesn't get back is a right off in my book.
Here is the company who did the repair:

Interesting site, but I wouldn't touch a car off there if they were paying me - you're just asking for trouble.
Don't walk away yet, as some cars have minimal damage, but are categorised. My porsche was recorded (I bought it from a salvage yard). All it needed was a new front bumper (fibreglass), newradiator and undertray. The previous owner had driven over a tyre on the motorway. That was it, no further problems at all.
However........when I say don't walk away, I mean don't walk away if you have paid the right amount of money for a repaired car. If you can, find out what damage it had, and maybe speak to the previous owner, like I did.
If you buy it, and there is no reason why you shouldn't unless it has had major work that quite rightly would affect the roadworthiness of it, then pay the correct money for it.
It is the sellers responsibility to inform the buyer that the car is recorded.
Hope all goes well, and if you need to talk about the process off forum feel free to email me.
Regards,
Mike.

Thank you all,
It has been good to read your comments.
And thank you for the website of the repairier, I shall follow this up.
It would seem that the car was fully inspected by Autolign in Feb last year and past the Autolign test. This is the company that HPI themselfs recommend.
I have requested that we obtaine a further RAC inspection and the seller should then put right any miss givings from this and have a full Service before I buy.
I have to say that Chris the seller does appear to be very reasonable, but I would agree this car is still being sold at a premium price.
The reason why I still consider this car is that it has all the optional extra's fitted to the car which new would have been over £8000 worth, which I guess would still have a small extra value to the car. Also the inside of the car is to my liking i.e. dark wood with black carpet and sat nav.
I dont feel that a convertable should be more as at the end of the day we are in England not the US, and well its only half the car.
Thanks again for your help I will keep you posted.

In your position I'd not buy a Cat D car at anything more than at a 20% discount to the market value.
When you come to sell the car you will not be able to trade it in to any main dealer, be they a Jag dealer or not, and most traders will either make you a derisory offer or put the 'phone down on you.
All these parties will hpi the car and their valuation will not alter whether it is on the "condition inspected" register or not.
Is this "Chris" a trader? If so, then he should have declared the car as Cat D. Take him to the Small Claims Court if he refused to give you your deposit back.

I fear if you drive a coupe and then a convertible you will actually discover that the latter is in fact TWICE the car, not half!
Good luck anyway.

I think that depends on if its raining or not and if you want to go round corners whithout the body flexing
don't get me wrong I like both - just think each has its strengths and weaknesses

That's right, each to his/her own!
