What we really want is an electric folding hard top

I haven't seen any pictures of the convertible version of the ALC yet - is that too much to hope for?

So here I go.. is it the XKR I've always dreamed off or not.

I suppose without trying to sound as though I don't care about the money or that I have buckets loads of it. I have been thinking that this car fits my tasts (i.e. black and cream leather trim with sat nav and all the extra's)it might be worth taking the risk.

At the end of the day as I see it if when I come to sell it in 4 to 5 years time (assuming it lasts that long) I would only lose about £1500 on the value, and if it is really the car for me then I might just go for it.

In 4 to 5 years time it will be older and have proved (hopefully) its time on the road and the buying market place will be very diffrent. So I dont think I should lose too much on the car.

As a side issue I was at one stage thinking of buying a TVR Cerbera, which I was put off by the £3000 a year breakdown bills, over and above the running cost's. I think that in my position I can take on the XKR, but knowing I can not put a warrity on it, I need to know that it is sound and in good working order, as I dont want to get back to £3000 a year in breakdown cost's.

I have requested that Chris (the Seller) has a RAC inspection and puts right any miss givings and has a full jag 10,000 miles service on the car before I buy it. The car is booked in the next wends.

I will keep you posted, and thank you all for your time and support.

Thank you.
Nick.

Nic, you said that Chris's car was black, I think its blue from memory?

PS Have you seen the Black 2002 XKR in the Pistonheads Classified Jag section, its got highish miles at 73k but its up for £26k, with a Jag warranty?

Mark I agree this should have been disclosed from the outset, so shame on Chris for that. But I guess if it had been inspected and so called 'removed from the register fro smacked cars, I'm surprised and pleased it still came out on the HPI.

Chris is a private selley BTW.

Nick,
Not being funny, but cancel the RAC warranty as they really are not worth a toss, as they just do a stock x point check, and arent looking. You say its going for a full 10K service - you might as well take advantage of the qualified mechanics, and ask nicely if they will spend an extra hour looking over the car and making up a list of what they COULD fix, given an unlimited budget(phrase it better than this, obv..) This should produce a nicely balanced report, but one which shows up the fact that the steering rack gaiters are on their last legs (as an example, not that they are(but I am providing no warranty that they in good condition either)).

HTH,

Marcus
P.S. Did the same on my 944 at purchase, and best hours labour I ever spent....

Good idea Randall, infact Weybridge Jaguar have just sent me a letter offering a free fullm inspection of my XK free of charge with full valet after.

Might be a good idea to take of advantage of this. Runs till end of June.

Hi Guys,

Yes, I did mention black, sorry I ment the carpet's and some of the dash etc. i.e. not so bright with the wood finish, which I like personal choice of course.

Chris (the seller) is arranging the service with Gatwich Jag. I suppose I could telephone them and ask them to do the inspection for me at my cost, but not so sure Chris would be happy with this (but I also gues I do have the uper hand here).

I also intend on looking over the car again of course, this time without mt rose tinted shades ;-)

My thought is that when I come to sell it 4 years later the value may only be £10k ish, and if I lose 15 to 20%, its not the end of the world if the car feels right for me. I have been looking for one with this interior colour code and sat nav for 6 weeks, so i am quite keen on the car.

Just hope it will turn out ok. I also get the feeling that it is being sold for a gen' reason.

Thanks for the help guys.
Nick.

My comment was actually made half in jest in response to the previous post regarding the coupe being half the car that the convertible is, so I was merely highlighting some advantages of the coupe in particular having a stiffer bodyshell, you don't have to go particularly fast, its more apparent when cornering on uneven road surfaces - and is something that virtually all convertibles suffer from. The extra steelwork added to the bodyshell to try to compensate for this also adds to the weight making the convertible slightly heavier and slower than the Coupe.

But I still want one of each

I can honestly say that I have had absolutely no problems with road-holding or body flexing in mine!

It is lowered and sits on 20 inch wheels. I must admit I am no Michael Schumacher, but even I have not managed to put it in the hedge yet.

In addition I drove from the Wirral to Thruxton yesterday to watch GT racing. Roof down all the way - makes life worth living. Get a Ragtop - IMHO.

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the lack of the update, I had trouble logging on again with my current account.

Anyway, I can tell you that I have walked away from this car..

Chris the seller arranged a RAC vehicle check for me from my deposit funds. The vehicle check was not to bad, but did highlight things that I was not too happy with i.e. rear panel being heavly repaired with filler! I do not wish to slate this car on line as I would like to wish the Chris all the luck in the world in selling this car (i think he will need it, having looked into the reports). I did however agree that he could retain my deposit of £250.00 as a gesture of goodwill to cover the RAC inspection (£130.00) plus Advertising (£60.00) and some for his time whilst I was making my mind up and investigating, albeit this cost me a further £100.00.

I am not worried about the money, but just hope he can sell the car for what he wants, as £23000, is too high for all that history. Albeit looks great.

I have now purchased an alternative XKR. Same sort of spec, but not the Black dashboard and without the SAT NAV. Although a year newer and only 42K miles on the clock apossed to 50k, fully serviced, not a mark on it and a years MOT put on it via a dealer for the same money at £23,000.

Had the car for 2 days and have not stopped looking at it since.

Once again, thanks all for your kind help.

Regards,
Nick.
