I have driven a new XJR and it is lovely, quick, quiet, refined and better handling than the old model (mine!) Seriously good value second hand as they depreciate like mad. Mine is old (2000) and I have the original bill for 50 odd grand, one owner from new, full history but 100K on the clock but I only bought it for 8.5K. Serviced it immediately and nothing has gone wrong in 15K in 6 months.

Totally agree. Mine is an '04 X350 XJR and it's sublime. I'm normally a manual gearbox man, but the autos are now so smart that I question the need for it. Maybe a few more bhp and the flappy paddles as per the new XK would be good. I'm just astonished more people haven't clocked how good it is and gone out and bought one.

The car is enormously relaxing to drive but subtly firms up if you push it on. Traction control pretty clever too. And sitting in the excellent sports seats. with the R-leather steering wheel, looking out over that lithe subtly curved bonnet is a really pleasant and very 'Jaguar' place to be. I read an interview with an armed robber last year who identified the XJ as the optimum getaway car 'because it gives you confidence.' He had a point.

What you also find is that unlike BMWs and Mercs people let you out of side roads.

The only problem has been that the press/media in Britain has criticized the car from day one as old fashioned because its design has clearly been developed from the '68 XJ6 (as if that mattered) and the fashion has turned against retro styling, and this has obscured the fact that it is a truly fantastic machine. What that fails to recognise is that all styling is retro now, it just has to be subtler. Look at the Masi QP they all rave about. I have to say that I'm not sure about Callum's new front end and rear bumpers. Looks like a chavved up MG ZT.

stop press saw one of the new ones in Coventry on saturday and it looks better in the flesh.

Just bought an XJR , ex demo from jag which has already leaked cash , but I have to say what an awesome machine , quality , handling, practical , good mpg and so very different than your average german barge. The noise from he supercharger is just terrific .... a brit bruiser
