Hi folks

I've recently traded TVR Chimaera500 for a XKR (year August 2000) and now I am wondering if I still have a nikasil engine. Does anybody know at what date they changed?
Thanks for your help!

T.

The last Jaguars built with Nikasil liners were made in August of 1999.

Tropper

Thank you for your help.

The serial number of my car(as inprinted on my windscreen) is SAJAA42J8YPA05.

Now the A at the end sounds like Nikasil, doesnt it? Or did I misunderstand you?

A check on newer cars (like 2005) showed the following serialnumber: SAJDA41B853A44358. (http://used-car-buffalo.com/Vehicle_o
There, all letters from 6 to the end areA or B.

Can I ask you again for advise, is my car a nikasil according to the serialnumber SAJAA42J8YPA05?

Please excuse my dullness.

Sorry timewind, I edited my post when I realised that the serial number information I gave was not going to be true for XK series cars.

I have now found the correct answer to the serial number question as it pertains to the XK. If I read this correctly the sixth from the last digit for XK with steel liners will be an "A".

The serial number you have provided for your car is short 3 digits (it should be 17 digits long) if the missing numbers are from the end then your car has steel and not Nikasil liners...

Sorry, my bad. The full serial number is SAJAA42J8YPA05355. Therefore no Nikasil, right :-)

Thanks again!

I'm not so sure, I am sure that V8 S-Types got Nikasil just as all the other cars, and switched over when they did.

Trooper2, you also need to understand that people in the UK age a car on the day it was sold, not the day it was built. To illustrate how much confusion this can give it could be built in July 97 and be sold in Sept 98, it'd give the impression of being a 99MY car but actually be a 97MY.

Yes, that is an know mistake in that magazine article which I got at jag-lovers.org, I'm confident the other information is correct.

Can't the build date be gotten from the door placard?

I looked into this very closely before I bought my XKR.

Bottom line, if the VIN has 5 numerical digits at the end, steel.

If it has 6, it's nikasil.

You are safe, my friend!

I wouldn't worry too much about Nikasil. Just get a blow-by check done and with a result of anything less than 25 l/m you will be fine. In fact if a Nikasil engine has lasted this long, in my XK8's case nearly 10 years, it will be fine and will most likely outlast the steel lined engines.
