Hi, I've been looking through the forum and seen that there is quite a lit of good advice about the XJR V8s but not so much written about the 6's. I was originally thinking of getting a V8 but am a bit worried about relaibility and therefore thing the straight 6 might be the better choice.

Does anyone have any advice on these ones.

The 3 cars I am considering are a Jaguar XJR, Audi A8 4.2 and a Mercedes W140 S600 (notice no BMWs in that line-up!!!).

Thanks
Norman

Hi

I have had my XJR6 for seven years now, no major problems, it is a good car, 84k on the clock and going strong.

Wot 'e said. I have now (hopefully) sold my manual 6 pot XJR as of this weekend but it is tinged with sadness as she has been a real trooper and carried our family around for 60 odd thousand miles with no real problems to report. Not as quick as the V8 but highly entertaining and basically unbreakable.

I'd go for the XJR6.

OK so it's older and a bit slower, and may not be such a dynamic drive as the 8, but there's no doubt which of the two cars is more bombproof.

Parts are cheaper and it's easier to fix if it goes wrong

Buy a good one and you may even have a future classic on the drive

Yeah I would definately go for the 6. A manual would be awesome but I guess pretty difficult to find. I should probably go and try to view and drive a few just to get a feel for them. A bit more difficult up here in Scotland. All the good cars seem to be advertised down south but it will be worth the travel and time investment!
