Dam wipers, whats going on???????????

Just been out for a drive in my 1998 XJ8 4.0. The wipers have started playing up. When I flicked for a single wipe the wiper wiped for 9 sweeps then parked on the wrong side. After a little experimentation it seems that I now have totally random wipers that will switch on, but park and cycle in no specific pattern. Sometimes they work fine but minutes later go all random again.... To add to my woes the car suddenly lost all power, I coasted to a halt switched off the ignition ( engine stalled warning showing on the display...like I hadn`t already noticed duuh!) I tried starting and she fired up first time, no repeat of this incident... but those bloomin` wipers are driving me crackers.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening here and what is the best solution

Hi,

Would bet a very large sum of money that it's the wiper motor that is at fault. Very common problem, options are a new wiper motor assembly a second hand one or, PM me if you want a repaired one, second hand is risky because of the commen failing, repaired ones are supplied on an exchange basis and come with six months warranty also half the price of a new unit.

Hi d type, thanks for that. What would the cost be of a suitable motor and what kind of a job is it to replace? Please tell me it`s not a dash out job!!
